I used to have an AUG (one of the real ones, bought in 1986) and looking back what strikes me now is that the barrel must have been some medium weight profile (the rifle itself was quite heavy for something made mostly of plastic and aluminum). What's more, the chamber end of the barrel was very skinny, compared to the AR. Does anyone have one they can take measurements off of?

By the way, the AUG had a true quick-change barrel...slide the spring-loaded button froward and down, and pull the barrel out. That simple!

I sold mine in the mid 90's. Kinda wish I still had it.

My 20" green A2 AUG has never struck me as being particularly heavy.  I find it quite light and quick actually.

It's heavier than an AR with a 20" barrel though.

I think the barrel is the culprit.

Got a set of calipers to measure that barrel diameter?

I had one too. Unforunetly I had to sell in back before the NJAWB took effect.

I have one, I always thought that it weighted about the same as my 20" AR, although it could be more since I think it's more balanced with the CG closer to being over the gripping hand.

I have two 20" Green AUGs. The first time I handled a AUG I was a little suprised how much it weighed. It was not really heavy, but with the amount of polymer used I thought it would be much lighter.

But they are very well balanced. The 20" A1 AUG has the same weight as a 20" Colt AR15. This was according to NRA's book on Semi auto rifles. The AUG also has the same trigger pull as a standard AR15.

The AUG does have a pretty thick barrel. I think the 16", 20" and 24" AUG barrels have the same thickness. Do not know if they are as thick as a 20" HBAR AR15 barrel.

Now that I take mine out, and dust it off...

It does have a bit more weight than I had remembered.  Lighter than an HK93 though.

You know.....it is the revolutionary, way-ahead-of-its-time bullpup assault rifle made in Austria originally designated as the Sturmgewehr '77

Hey Chris....Wow....TWO green AUGs?  Are those PJ's acquisitions, or local purchases?  You must be the envy of your gun club.  Come across any nice AR70s yet???  If you do, PLEASE don't let me know 'cause my purchase moratorium is still in place until further notice   Happy shooting!!!

Would someone with an AUG please satisfy my curiosity:

Take the barrel off; look at the chamber end. Is it not much smaller in diameter than a typical AR?

When you say "chamber end" are you actually talking about the barrel extension locking lug recess on the AR barrel?

I got it from their emailing list. I had to erase it PRONTO....saw it at work. I was drooling on my keyboard and my I could feel my wallet getting lighter just looking at the screen. I checked the webpage as soon as I got home (SURE SIGN OF BRD!) to try and find it on their page to see it "just one more time." But, I couldn't find it on there. Your best bet would be to call them. Hopefully it's not already gone. I'd love to have it myself, but if not (strangely enough) I'd like you to get it. That's what's funny about this website/family-I don't know you, but I'd dang sure want one of my ARFCOMER buddies to get it over anyone else!!!

Give them a call!

Good observation, Chris (I missed that, myself)........he's either a lefty, or he wears a goalie mask when he shoots

Yep, I'm a lefty.

It was a bitch shooting with a right handed bolt so I had to buy a left handed one Although the brass marks in my cheek did give my face some character

Thanks 1P29!

A straight 0.727"...that would be a "midweight" barrel in AR land. No wonder the thing felt heavier.

I knew that chamber area was skinny! 0.765", when on the AR its a full 1.00"...

I wonder how they get away with that...
