I am setting aside $500 from my tax refund to buy a gun but I can't really decide what to get. I have a few ideas, but I am open to suggestions.

I almost said the .45 XD, but then I saw one in my local gunshop. After feeling it in my hot sweaty hand, I reluctantly decided to take a pass. The main reason is that it is still too big. It is smaller than a Glock, but it is bigger than my para, and since I have short fingers, that is a no-go. Also it sported a $600+ pricetag. If you have big hands, ignore my opinion, because other than the size, it seemed top notch. I would have liked to see a longer barrel, but that's only really important if you are trying to make MAJOR
With 5300+ posts on here, I am betting you already have an AR, probably other guns too. With that in mind, here are some suggestions: Depending on your caliber of choice: 9mm or .40S&W - Glock or Springfield XD + extra magazines .45 ACP - several 1911 variations can be had, I like Para's myself. .357 or .44 Everybody at least one S&W revolver [buy used if you are still pissed at them] Shotguns - hell 90% of shotguns are sub $500, I personally would go Mossberg 590. What about a bigbore upper for your AR? Do you have a bolt rifle? For me at least, shooting a bolt gun is just more "serious" despite the fact that 2 of my AR's are every bit as accurate as my bolt gun, it's just a perception thing. Lastly, if you don't have a "fun gun", I recommend 2, a ruger 10/22 and a S&W 22a. Both are phenominal shooters out of the box, and for your $500 budget, you could buy both, a gob of mags for each, a scope for at least one of them, and more ammo than you could carry. That would be the definition of more bang for your buck. My final suggestion isn't a gun, it's a reloading press. If you don't have a DILLON you should seriously consider one. I am able to afford to shoot 10x as much as I ever could otherwise. $500 sent to Mike Dillon possibly could be the best gun related money you have ever spent. Seriously. |

I'd buy a shotgun or a Ruger GP100. Reloading press or ammo if I didn't buy a gun.

almost any milspec AR lower ( DPMS, RRA, ETC) and a h-bar or carbine kit from double star and you've got an AR for $450-$500, which is my homeland security!

OK, let me go over what I do have to make it a little easier. The GLOCK is the only I carry as a primary CCW. The only handguns I would be interested in would possibly be a G26, a Witness 10mm, S&W 642 or a smaller 9mm such as a Kahr PM9 to replace the P-32 as my BUG.

it looks like you have all the "fun covered". Not sure if you hunt, but a CZ 550 safari in .458 lott or .416 rigby would be a nice addition for when you get that last minute offer to go hunting in Africa.

I would save the $500 and save more money to add to it. $500 does not buy much of a gun.

Is one of those 870s a Police model? How about a matching 11-87? You'd have to save beyond $500 but it's an idea. Or how about an FN Herstal Police shotgun? Another idea, past $500, is a really nice non-combat style shotgun and take up Trap shooting or something. Shotguns are on my mind because I've been hunting for a suitable model for my GF to use. On the high cost end, the Beretta AL391 models caught our eye. We went with a far less costly Win 1300.

go with a build yourself AR15, accurate , easy to get ammo for, plenty of room to customize to your standards or comfort , easy to mess with , parts are readily available , large aftermarket resources, dependable, looks cool,and did I mention it's the same thing our troops carry, oh, and if you want lite weight how about 4.5 lbs for a 16" pencil barrel AR15 carbine! also it's the #1 homeland security/SHTF gun!

for $399 at a local shop in Lincoln, NE. Thank god for layaway. I will be picking it up as soon as that Refund Gets here.. |

You are wrong about that. With $500 I could buy at least 5 K31's and and have five awesome rifles. All sub MOA and great long range shooters too. Some of the milsurps out there are phenomenal buys. |

I already have three ARs, two of which, I built.
I don't know about a Garand. I wouldn't mind having one as a piece of history, but I don't think I would shoot it that much. Realistically, there's not much it will do that I can't do with my FAL. I already have a stockpile of 7.62x51, and I'm not sure I need another gun with an expensve appetite. |

Buy a CMP rack grade and rebarrel for 7.62mm. That should fall around 500 bucks and you've got ammo commonality with your FAL. |

Buy the new Kahr .45, I just bought one and they are sweet. It shoots great and has a lot less recoil than I thought it would. Not bad at all even with +P ammo, and it is small and light very easy to carry.
I had never owned a Kahr pistol before but I like this .45 calber hand cannon.

Glad to hear you like the Kahr .45. I have considered a Kahr as a BUG, but I'll stick with 9mm if I get one. If I decide to get a larger caliber, I'm going with a 10mm. |

^ +1 on that craze! G29 or G20 can be found for less than $500
So can almost all Savage rifles. They are probably the best rifle "for the money" the way I see it. Big fan of Savage rifles.

If I could only have one, it would be a good ak. Can do most any task, and is a rifle, a real fighting gun. Works in SHTF, has a high capacity, cheap mags, and will run in almost any condition. Not the most accurate, but it doesn't need to be. It's not pretty, but why are you buying a gun.
Now, before the pistol backers get mad at me. I love pistols, but if I were only allowed one gun, it would always be a semi-automatic rifle patterned after an ak or ar or sig 556. They are just plain more deadly in a fight, and produce more accurate hits faster and with more powerful rounds. |

+1, just save yourself a little more and u can go through there pistol/carbine 3 day course. Or buy a SA XD-45acp, I got mine Friday and put 150rounds through it with no problem. I love it. Scout |

They USED to make the 75 in 10mm. I just checked the website and don't see it. I'm sure there are plenty on GB still. Training is a good idea also. |
