Leaving to go on vacation in a few day.  Pulling my travel trailer out west for a couple weeks and I can't decide which pistol to take with me. I am not likely to ever need it, but I do like to keep it in the trailer when camping in the boondocks. Our itineary is full so no shooting, hunting, or fighting outlaws is planned.

Choices are as follows:

Glock 22
Ruger P97DC
XD40
HS2000
Custom Series 70 Colt Gold Cup
Dan Wesson 4" 357
Ruger Redhawk 44 mag

I know some smart ass with say, Take them all. And somebody else with say that I need an AR15, MBR, shotgun, grenade launcher ect, ect.

If you're more worried about two-legged animals take the Glock,  4 legs, take the Redhawk.

Or both just to cover any problems 2 or 4 legged. But a good hot .40 load should work for 4 or 2 legged problems.

We just had a couple here in Oregon killed while camping in an out of the way area, Both shot to death. No leads yet. Take enough gun.

Take whichever 1 youre best with.  Thats a no brainer.  There has to be 1 gun in that list that you personally shoot better or are more comfortable with.  Thats the 1 you take.

Take 2. The 44 magnum & a hi-cap .40.

I'd take the Glock and the redhawk.

And the smartass in me would also take an AR

The Glock has the advantage in that it is, well...a Glock, and uses 40 cal hi-cap mags. Probably the best all around police service weapon ever made.

The P97 is a 45 and is easy to shoot. I have become very fond of it. And, of course it is a 45.

Just picked up some hi-caps for the XD40 and it works as well as the Glock and has some advantages. My Glock is a first gen pistol, whereas the XD40 has a rail and light mounted on it.

The HS2000 is a 9mm and easier for the wife and/or daughter to shoot than a 40.

I have a 2,4,6" bbls for the Dan Wesson. It's advantage is that one can shoot  all kinds of 38 spl or 357 mag loads in it.

The Redhawk is a bit overkill in most situations. It is however very viable for self defense with good 44 spls. Of course,  it will also kill just about anything with 44 mag loads.

The Gold Cup is too valuable to take, though a 45 it offers no practical advantage over the P97.

Be prepared...pack them all

My CCW is a G22, but you have so many other excellent options.
Pick whatever you are most comfortable and well practiced with.....and if you anticipate a 4 legged opponent, choose caliber wisely.

Maybe I should just take my Uzi. Not!

I've pretty much decided on the Glock.

Oh, and I've kept a Charter Arms AR7 in my camper for 20 years or so.

i like the K.I.S.S. theory when campimg/ trvaling like you mentioned.  i would go with the dan wesson.  with the 4" barrel and 125 jhp it is fairly compact and one of the best 2 legged stoppers out there and will stop or put a good hurt on all 4 legged also.  and you don't have magazines to lose/ misplace.  granted reloads a a little slower.   when you get down to it is six of one/ half a dozen of the other.  take the one you/ your family are most proficient with.

Another smartass comment:  Why not take a shotgun?

Space is limited and a pistol is easily stashed in a drawer or cabinet.

Just take the Glock or the XD40, whichever you shoot better with.

Take them all.  You can never be too prepared.

I agree, the G22 and a shotgun is what I would bring.  Handguns are only good for fighting your way back to the long arms.

Take them all. he
Why?

Because the .357 magnum is a great cartridge that will work well on bad guys.
