I can't afford to pay $700 for a semi-auto shotgun, but would still like to buy one.

What semi-auto shotgun is the most reliable yet most affordable?

Saiga, hands down.

Stoeger 2000

It uses the Benelli recoil system.

Awesome shotgun for the money. You can find them for around $325, new.

Also, check Wal-Mart for a Beretta 390. Sometimes you can find them for $450, new.

Exactly how much are you willing to spend?  Might help with suggestions.

By a used Auto-5. Great shotgun that isn't made anymore. Should hold it's value pretty well and you should be able to sell it pretty easily down the road if you want to upgrade.

I wouln't dream of parting with mine though.

Saiga if you don't have a lot of money. Benelli if you do.

Both are great guns. I own a benelli and I have shot about 25 rounds out of a Saiga.

The hunting version of this is the Pintail. Great shotgun that is essentially a Benelli M1 Field.

For the buck the Stoeger is very nice. Also the CZ 712 is a nice buy. The Saigas are great but not your standard hunting shotgun type set up. If you like the Saiga look/feel and can find one right now they work great (I have a 20g).

Yes!!! Mine was $290 out the door, fully chrome lined bore/chamber, adj gas settings, choice of 2/5/8rnd external mags, can convert to EVIL folder stock/pistol grip form, shorten bbl to 18", thread for Rem chokes.

Mine was about $250 plus another $50 to convert it...

My Benelli M-1 has been a major disappointment. Ejection problems, kicks like a mule, wont cycle light trap/skeet loads.

I'm going back to the 11-87, which was lost overboard last year duck hunting.

I much prefer gas in an auto shotgun.

Yep.  I find the 1100s and 11-87s to be softer recoiling, and very VERY reliable.  YMMV.
