Does anyone know what the fps on these are? What's the benefit of a .17 rifle versus a .177 airgun? Just curious...

IIRC the velocity of the new 17 HMR is 2550 with a 17 grain ballistic tip.  Obvioulsy more powerful than an air rifle, but it offers nothing the 22 WMR can't do for cheaper.

Don't buy into the flatter trajectory BS either, the 17 is flatter at 200 yards...what the hell are you going to be shootin a 17 rimfire at at 200 yards.  Point is very moot, not to mention the lack of any ballistic coefficeint!!!

The 17 Rem however is totaly different story.  We are talking about 20+ gr bullets at 3900+ FPS!!

There are a host of 17 cal cartridges so you have to be more specific.

The .17 HMR is quite accurate. I get just under 1"@100yds with it. I don't think there are any .22 mags capable of that accuracy.

I agree, those little .17 HMR bolt guns are pretty darn accurate, at least out to 100 yards. I'm probably getting 1/2" groups at 100 with a cheap Savage rifle and its got a terrible trigger. I can't imagine what it could do  with a decent trigger.....ECS

I have a .17 Rem that clocks 4050 fps. It will get .400" at 100m hot or cold.
Hit a groundhog or crow with it and it turns them inside out.

Wow I somehow had the impression they were somewhere in the 1500 fps range hence my wondering why not just use an air rifle. Are you owners happy with them? I didn't even know they existed until a few months ago.

Mine is a centerfire .17
A few guys I worked with bought .17 Mags and loved 'em. I already had a .22 mag and decided against that purchase.

22 mag. cannot compete with a 17 HRM in accuracy, period.  Nor can it do just about anything better than a 17HRM. The only thing a mag. can do is throw a 40gr. [or bigger] bullet.  But with ballistic tips performing so well, 40's are not needed here anymore.  17 rimfire mag.  has earned its place right quick for good reason.  Never had a 17 centerfire, too many 223's in my house.
As for the noise level, 17's are very noisy.  Supersonic crack every time, do not forget your hearing protection.

I have a CZ American in .17HMR.  Great rifle, very accurate--I agree, I don't think you can get that kind of accuracy out of a .22 Mag.

While it outperforms an air rifle, it feels likes shooting one

I also own a Marlin .17 with a 6-24x on it. Love it to death. It's a blast to shoot and accurate as all git out. At 100 yds, 1 inch groups are considered loose. A couple of weeks ago I took the varmit scope off and put a little 4x on it for squirrel hunting...I was eating a lot of squirrel the next couple days. My only knock on the .17 is the ammo's a little pricier than .22L.
