I owned a Sig AMT in .308, one of the very few that ever came in country pre-89. Terrific weapon, very very accurate and like all swiss guns, made like a watch. Odd ergos, but comfortable. It was heavy, tho.

I doubt Sig will ever make them here, much too complicated. If they did, they'd cost $2000 for all the machining and fitting involved. Trust me, when you see the innards, you know exactly what I mean. It's like a Bren in that sense.

Whether you meant it or not, it is a superior weapon to the FAL in many respects.

If they do, then while their at it they should make the 550 and 551.  I won't be holding my breath.

I know where you're coming from. The 550 is where it's at.

If you guys have some extra cash there are SIG 550s for sale on www.strumgewehr.com for $4,495 they are LEO guns with the correct number of US parts!!!! So anyone can buy them. This is way too much money for me, but if someone has wanted a SIG 550 and did not want to spend 10,000 this is a good deal.

Yes, if it's a PE57. The Sig AMT was available as both .308 and 7.5 swiss, IIRC. I had the .308 version.

No they are all SIG. They are LE semi auto rifles with the correct number of US parts.

Just spend 130 bucks on a K31 and you'll get all the accuracy you will need on the cheap.

As far as I know, the SIG AMT, like the 510-4 itself, was only available in .308.  The PE-57 ( StGw-57) was the 7.5x55mm rifle.

A further point...

The SIG rifle in the top photo looks like a SIG AMT that has had a SIG 510-4 barrel and the barrel cover unit with the bayonet lug added to the original rifle.  As far as I know, all of the SIG AMTs came into the US with a smooth exterior barrel profile (the bumps for supporting the rifle grenade were turned off) and a threaded muzzle (which usually supported a FN-49 type slotted muzzle brake - like the ones that were original on the Venezuelan M1949s).  The 510-4 flash suppressor in the photo is an integral part of the barrel, not a removeable unit.

The SIG 510-4 looked like the rifle in the top picture above, but, as far as I know, the SIG AMT was the only rifle that sported the white rectangle on the right side of the trigger pack (which was supposed to be a quick identification of the semi-only AMT).

DSA has new 510-4 barrels (which they advertise as AMT barrels) and other SIG 510-4 parts.  It is completely legal to replace AMT parts with 510-4 parts (except for the full auto trigger group and other full auto parts, of course).

The select fire SIG 510-4, and the semi-auto SIG AMT that was developed from it, are both great guns (and relatively rare).  They are too heavy by modern standards, and the angular shape of the receiver makes them somewhat uncomfortable to carry by their sling, but they are well made rifles.
