......308........i had a 10-fp.....only reason i traded it off is because it was 300 wm.....really expensive and banged the shoulder pretty hard...after the first few rounds......quit being fun....unless you need pin point 500-yrd or so......definetly 308.....

Mud, been there and done that. The .300 is gone and has been replaced with .308's. For me the .308 is super accurate, cheap to reload for and surplus components abound.

i will probably go with the .308
i saw a box of .300 win mag and saw the price. it was 30 some dollars for 20 rounds. what about savage rifles? are they any good? btw, cya at the next BRD, if there is one

I think yall helped me out.I am also trying to decide between .308 and .300wsm.I dont know about the recoil but the price of ammo alone may be enough to consider .308.

.308 Winchester. You can use inexpensive surplus military 7.62x51 NATO rounds for plinking and sighting in, and save the expensive stuff for when you are shooting for absolute accuracy. Who wants to sight in a scope with ammo that costs $1.25 a shot? 11 cents a shot is more like it.
Furthermore, the .308 round is capable of taking any game animal you'll find in the western hemisphere. In terms of accuracy it is on par with the .300 Win Mag or any other caliber for that matter until you get to very long range (750 yards plus). Unless you plan on doing alot of thousand-yard shooting, I don't see why the Win Mag is worth it. By the way, Savages are fine once you get the trigger worked on. I had a really nice 10FP once, sometimes I wish I had it back. |

Mud...The new Savage rifles are excellent! They are enjoying a new positive reputation for acuracy and quality. The new owner really turned the place around. About all that remains of the old Savage is the name. Purchase with confidence.

if this is your first rifle like this get the .308
tons of good factory(Black Hills, Federal Gold etc.) ammo & cheaper to shoot & reload for what barrel length are you going to get ? I have a 20" 10FP in .308 that actually has more recoil than my 24" Winchester M70 Laredo with BOSS in .300WinMag the extra weight of the longer barrel & H.S. stock along with the muzzle brake make the Laredo a pussy cat the Savage is a more conistent(accurate) grouping rifle too, I think primarily because of the .308 cartridge |

Whats your use going to be , I have always loved the .338
If all your going to do is punch holes in paper .308 If you want a rifle that can kill a griz --- .338 If you want long range -- 300 win mag. shit --get them all.

Mister, I would say you should get a .308.
If you reload, you will get more rounds per pound of powder with the .308. Brass is cheaper. Ammo is quite a bit cheaper. Cyanide's choice of .338 is also a GREAT one, but then you get back into the magnum range. The .308 is the bestest and mostest balancest cartridge in America. If 9.3X62 was more widely available, that would probably be my #1 recommendation. Could someone please tell me their good experience with the Short magnum cartridges? They don't seem very attractive to me, unless they were in an autoloader. |

......I replaced the 10fp with a 112 vss in 25-06.....ammo still a little costly at first......it will do the same job as the 300wm......or close enough....great shooter too..........

A nice bolt action Remington 700 or Browning A-Bolt would also suit your needs.

You have my vote on the .308 also... As far as Savage I have the 10FP-LE1 in .223 with 20" barrel and it is my favorite shooter under 300yds... super accurate. I just got rid of an AR-10T which I really liked.. BUT since I was getting a 50 I had to get rid of it <sad face>... currently I have a Tikka M595 in 308 and completely love it for the accuracy and availability in ammunition. I havent personally shot the 300WM but with knowing the ballistics I would have to agree with the general consensus and say that if you arent shooting over 700yds stick with the 308 (7.62Nato)

My choice is the 300 Win Mag.
I have a Remington Sendaro. I took a 325 yard shot at a groundhog. I have the gun zeroed at 200 yards. Aimed at the neck of the hog and the bullet impact was in the right shoulder. Hog moved about 15 feet away. No left shoulder left on the critter. Since I am a recoil wuss, I sent it off to JP Enterprises to have their comp installed. Now the recoil is like a 243. I would vote for the 308 due to the cheaper ammo and less recoil. |

For inexpensive .270 ammo that works great go to www.centuryarms.com. They have PMP soft point ammo for about $6.50 a box. My Steyr shoots it better than Federal or Remington. It's all I use in it now. The 300 win mag would be nice if you're going after Grizzly bear but the .270 should do the job on just about everything else.

my thoughts exactly, I'm a big fan of the 270.
Flat, accurate, and packs a heavy wallop. It's basically a 308 with some muscle. |

Wow, lots of 270 talk here. Killed LOTS of deer with my Ruger 270 thats over 20 years old. I love that weapon. It shoots reloads really well. It's far better than any 308 for what I use it for. But for really long range stuff, I have a Remington 700 PSS DM in 300 WM. That thing with hand loads shoots .400" 3 shot groups all day long. We use it to shoot gallon milk jugs at 800+ meters ! We have a place in the high desert where we have 1800 meters to shoot! My friends all have PSS in 308. Much easier on the shoulder. I can fire 75 rounds of 300 and need a break. The 308s can go 150 or more before calling it quits. DO NOT GET A SAVAGE !! A friend blew up his 308 FP-10 Tac gun with a bad FACTORY round. POS! Now he has a Rem 700 and says he waisted the $$ on the Savage trying to save a buck or two. Ain't worth it. Do it right or not at all.
