Which 8mm Mauser?

So far, from my reasearch and talking to people who know more than me, it looks like the Yugo M48 is the one I want.

I'm not really interested in collectors value, I want a good shooter for under $200.

Anyone think the Yugo M48 isnt the best bang for the buck in 8mm?

Which one should I buy?

If all you want is a shooter, in good condition look at the Czech VZ24. Its a carbine length rifle with a straight rather than bent bolt. Got mine at a recent fun show for $60. Cleaned up pretty nice for a $60 gun.

My Yugo is a good Mauser, I would buy it again.

I really like my M48. It's well made and a good shooter. They're a bargain for what you pay for one at a gun show. If you buy a Russian captured 98k, try to buy one you can examine first. The ones at Empire arms are pretty good as far as buying on the net. I found a good one at a gun show. Some of them are really screwed up though.

Try CDNN. That's where I picked up my Yugo capture K98k, $109.00 if I remember right, and worth every penny!

Federal Arms Corp was advertising Russian capture 98k's with intact markings in the $200 range.

Whatever you get, watch the rear sights. Some of them have the closest zero at 400 meters!

If you are willing to spend up to $200 on a Yugo Mauser you should be able to get a near mint example. It's the best deal going right now. They are really nice rifles with some of the prettiest wood. If possible, look for the Yugo 8mm ammo that comes on 250 round 1919 linked belts in ammo cans. It's great surefire ammo from the eighties, brass cased, very mildly corrosive, and has a 198 grain fmjbt bullet. I've found it to be accurate stuff. We had 400,000 rounds of it at work, and stupid me only bought 500 rounds for my personal use!

How hard would it be to change the chambering to 308 0r 3006? I saw the barrels in shotgun news.

All I can tell you is that I have a M48 and it has moved up into my favorite guns to shoot of all time. I've fired my buddies Turk and there is no comparrison. My 43 Nagant is a piece of junk compared to the Mauser. Stick with your gut feeling for you're right on.

Why would you want to change the caliber? The 8mm is superior to the 30.06 and the .308 isn't even in the same boat. Turk 8mm surplus is $5.00 for 70 rounds on strippers. The new hunting soft nose rounds aren't as hot but readily available. Argentinian, Chech, German, and Turk surplus is everywhere. The surplus is corrosive but once you get the hang of cleaning, it's not that bad.

It's not too dificult to change calibers. Unscrew the old barrel, screw on the new one (short chambered) and cut the chamber with a finishing reamer. You may have to do a little work on the receiver rails to make it feed properly.

It helps to have a lathe. A barrel vise and receiver wrench are nice too. Oh yeah, haedspace guages.

The Yugo M24, M48 Mausers are short action (about 1/4")though & need some additional machine work done to the barrel. They aren't as straight forward to rebarrel as a 'pure' M98.

The only Mauser I have ever shot is my Yugo M48, and I must say that it fires extremely well. I got it for $99, and aside from ammo, I haven't had any problems with it. The only thing to watch is, as someone said, the rear sight on mine has a closest possible zero of 200 yards/meters (I don't know which). I have heard of some being extreme like 400, but the ones I have seen are mostly 200. Watching the ammo is the biggest thing I have seen, assume it is all corrossive, clean it well after every shooting, and have fun.

Has anybody tried any of the ex-Persian long Mausers that recently came on the market? They seem to have seen little use, and are not cosmo cases like the Yugos*.

*Half the fun of shooting a Yugo Mauser is watching the cosmoline ooze out of the stock after you've been firing it for a while...

i shot my m48a twice in the past week and love it. i usually shoot at 25yds so i can see the target clearly and i have 2 three shot groups that are touching. very accurate and they look nice too. buy it! i also have a m48 which i havn't shot yet because it looks so nice.
