All 870s made for the last few years have the magazine tubes modifed with dimples that prevent extended magazine tubes from working.  Any good gunsmith can remove them.  The 870 Police models,as well as the Marine (nickled) and Express model with the factory installed extended magazine dont have them.

I have a Remington 11-48, the pre 1100 recoil operated semiauto from the late 40's, early 50's.  It, too, had dimples.  You simply drill through them with a 1/8" bit, and the problem is gone.  With some silicon carbide paper glued on a dowel, polish the inside of the mag tube in that area to knock off any resulting burrs.

Oh, you an put an 870 mag extension on a 11-48, you just need to put a spacer, between the nut and the front of the forearm to make up for the thread on the end of the mag tube being longer than the depth of the threads on the 870 mag extension.

It takes about 30 seconds to make the dimples go away.

Choates website use to address this but I have not checked it lately. I think they recommended drilling out the dimples and gave the proper size drill bit.

I removed my dimple without drilling. I used a Craftsman socket that fits exactly inside the mag tube. Hammer the socket in and back it out with a ratchet a few times. The socket keeps from stressing the mag tube and possibly getting it out of round. The socket pushes out almost all the dimple, but not quite. Dremel the rest of the dimple away inside the mag tube, and Voila!... install mag tube extension and you're done. No dimple, and no hole.
