Many many years ago when I was being taught (w/o a lot of success) to shoot hi-power rifle by the Camp Perry type guys, they would let people who they thought were "flinchers" shoot m1a's instead of Garands-I assumed because it had less felt recoil, oh and girls were allowed to shoot m1as also, not boys if you didn't want to be seen as a nancy boy.
I read a good statement in a gun rag that it helps to think of recoil as being the result of a good shot, kind of like the impact you feel from a baseball bat from a strong hit. |

I would say that in a similar rifle, .308/7.62x51 and .30 (.30-06) will feel about the same. Bullet weights and velocities are almost identical.
Now, an M1 in .30-06 might not feel exactly like, say, a lightweight FAL in 7.62. The weight of the rifle, and the operation of the action can affect felt recoil greatly. |

I thought they felt the same but I had to check with the pro's....so what semi-auto .308 does anyone recomend ? Reliability is my #1 concern because I realy hate all that shipping a rifle back-and-forth nonsense.

Not a bit of difference on my shoulder...
Now the difference between the .30-06 in the M1 Garand and the M1903 is noticable. |

I cant imagine it being much different in an auto but a bolt gun is a bit different. The 30.06 does recoil a bit more in a bolt gun. The only .308 auto that I have fired was a FAL. Loved that rifle. Wish I still had it.

My only semi 308 is an HK and it's stone cold reliable-but the price they are asking for them now is outrageous. If I was going to buy a 308 battle rifle new I'd probably get a DSA Fal from what I have heard, or a Springfield M1A.

You might also want to look at the Armalite AR10s. I have a flattop / 308, its got a relatively soft recoil, but its LOUD, due to the muzzle brake.

The .308 is a much milder round than the .30-06...by a lot!!!

Took my Garand to the range Saturday and 'swapped' some trigger time with a DSA STG58 (with a muzzle brake) and really liked it.In these configurations the .06 difference was noticable...so glad I got to try them at the same time.Any other .308 suggestions (must have an evil pistol grip)?
