Need to get a new shotgun for self defense. What's the best shotgun for the $? Don't really want to spend over $800 for a Benelli. Although rifle sights would be nice.

I recently picked up a Mossberg 590A1 with 20" barrel (9 rounds total).  You can get ghost ring sights for about an extra $40-50.  Mine is just plain vanilla with usual stock, bead sight, parkerized and I paid $330 + tax.  It will serve my self-Defense purposes nicely.

You might look into that option.  The Bennelli looked nice...but I wanted something a little less pricey

I got a Ithaca 37 parkarized riot gun (7+1) at a flea market in Prescott Valley for $180, and I love the bottom feed/ejection.
There's a gunshow coming up at the Fairgrounds on July 6-7, you might want to check around then

Benelli Nova's are about $350 here with Ghost Rings. Add the factory mag extension and it rocks. Have one on my short list.

Prrobably a Mossberg if you must buy new.  A plain vanilla 18.5" bead sight M500 will get the job done.  If used then the possibilities open up more.  Check out flea markets, newspaper classifieds & garage sales.  My parents managed to find me a Remington 870 Wingmaster for $120 at a garage sale.  Granted the barrel was 28" long & somebody had stuck a cheap, unfitted recoil pad on it but still...  You can find good Mossberg & Savage/Stevens pumps all the time at +/- $150.  Cut & crown the barrel at 18.5", install a new bead & you're done.  If you actually have to use it for defense it's much better to have your $150 Savage/Stevens gathering dust in the PD property room than your $800 Benelli.

Get a Remington 870.  They are very strong and simple, there are lots of accessories for them if you want and plenty of parts available if you should break it (lots of police depts. carry them).

Remington makes a Home Defense model for around $200 (don't quote me on the price).  It's got a synthetic stock and a plain, rather rough blue finish but it's the same barrel and action as the rest of the 870's.  It will require a few minor modifications if you want to add an extended mag tube or a Side Saddle ammo holder but most 'smiths can do it for you (or you might be able to yourself).

And how's the house coming along Dave?

The Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 both run about $200, are pump action with dual rails and come in a defender/home defense model with a short 18" barrel and synthetic stock.

I just bought a Benelli M1 Super 90. I have wnated one for a long time but could never bring myself to pay that kind of money. Pick one up and you'll buy it. I also have an Ithaca M87 with 20" barrel and full lenght mag. The cool thing about the Ithaca is that is has an auto trigger, meaning that you can hold the trigger down and it will fire every time you cycle the action.

Watch the pistol grip only model (unless you're tough), recoil sucks on the wrist.  If it has the full stock/pistol grip you're good to go.  I put a speedfeed stock on mine, MUCH more effective now.  HTH

Ditto on the Remington 870.  It should be 250 bucks or less at Wal Mart.  That in a 12 guage and some 00 buck is all you will ever need for home defense for a shotgun.

The Winchester 1300 seems to be a great performer at a good price. You can get one around here for around $200. If you want to spend a little more get a Mossberg 590 with the ghost ring sight setup...as this seems to work well for fast shooting with both buckshot and slugs.

Just buy a Benelli Nova w/ ghost rings and get the mag Ext.

Don't buy a mossburg 590 or a Rem 870 like everyone else, for basically the same price, you can have a higher quality shotgun.

I couldnt count how many 870's I have sold to people taking Tactical shotgun classes when I use to work on a range.

If you are looking at cheap but good get a used 870 police, can be had for about $150, rough on the outside but little use. Has an 18.5 barrel already, a steel (aluminum?) trigger housing instead of plastic, better finish than the Express and no dimples to drill out to install extended mag, most already have the extended mag.

I own a Mossberg 590 and for the money spent its alot of gun.  At work we carry the Bannelli M1 Super 90's with 14" barrels and they ROCK.  Only 5 rounds because of the short barrel, but hey if you need more than 5 rounds at close range you better run!

PS Eric beautiful dog (pit), makes me miss mine, looks just like her!

Benelli Nova w/ext. for about 375 bucks.. brand new and a excellent skeet/trap gun.. also the fastest cycling pump shotgun made to date.. i have a 26" with the 3 shot mag ext and shoot skeets all the time.. i've shot atleast 3000 shells through it with only a hiccup or two..  I bought mine the day they arrived in stores for 407 bucks including tax.. one of the best gun purchases i've made

Folding front sight & no rear sight is an interesting concept for a tactical shotgun (Although H&K is supposed to sell a rear sight that clips onto the picatinny rail). Looks almost exactly like a Benelli M4 Super 90 w/ fixed stock; just need to add the optional feed tube extension.

What is the definition of self defense? You don't need a tactical shotgun for self defense if you are using it for your home. A cheap used Mossberg cut off with the plug out using #6 shot is all you will ever need for home defense. I would not spend over $125 for this. The best "new" bargain is the Charles Daly 870 clone.

Look at the EAA Saiga line of semi-autos based on the AK action, if an auto appeals to you.  Removable box magazine, too.

Thanks guys, the decision has been made. I've got a Winchester 1300 coming in today.I found a sweet deal on the gun (around 240) and a killer deal on the surefire replacement forearm light. So I'm set. Besides, if it makes waverunner crap his pants even with the mod, it must be a great shotgun!

Let's see, you got the tac light. Cool.
Sling? I like the BlackHawk brand shotshell sling(don't forget a sling swivel), either that or a side saddle. Is it a pistol grip or a full stock? I have the Hogue/Knoxx industries recoil absorbing stock.....oh and don't forget to get it camo'd by Lauer Custom Weaponry. I feel like chopping heads off!

OK, take a breath. It comes with the pistol grip kit. Haven't decided on a sling. Doubt I'll be humpin it around. And the urbam camo, nah, I don't own a .50, Glock or M1, so I don't need cammo. Out here it's so dry and dusty it'll be "desert tan" in no time! I got the light dirt cheap so I said what the hell, but after pimping out my Bushy with KAC RAS and forehand grip and ACOG, i'm going to go with simplicity on my 12 gauge! Now, when I get my MP5SD, I may have to drag out my felt wide brim hat, red polyester leasure wear and start some serious pimpin!
