I have had a plan to have several of my firearms refinished at some point, but does it make any sense to hard-anodize them prior to fininshing so as to harden the metal surfaces?

Is this a worthy extra step?

Anyone?

Yes.

Hard-anodizing coats and seals the surface (.002'' thickness) of the aluminum.  Hard anodizing is ALOT harder than the underlying aluminum (I forget what it's Rockwell rating is).

We had a discussion about hard anodizing a while ago.  Look for the "$125.00 for hard anodizing?" thread.
