What do you guys think about these for a rifle like the mini 14, or should I just practice with open sights?

are these a good Idea for defensive guns for home defense and a in the truck gun?

If you get one , get a cheapie to put on your Mini14 , I have a really cheap Tasco on my AR and its pretty accurate out to 100 yards . Acquiring a target is easier with one than open sights especially in low light situations .

I love red dots.  Much easier than irons.  On a mini 14 all you need is a Tasco Propoint or similar.  I have a Propoint 2 from the wifes 10/22 I plan on putting on an M1 Carbine.  We'll see.

how much do the cheap ones run? do you just have too line the red dots up and fire, or do you line it up with the frontsite?

what are the disadvantages?

I paid $29 for mine at Wal-Mart , I bought it on a whim , say it and it was cheap enough to try out . One the funny side none of the 'Gun' stores will carry them , one store owner said he  though they were too cheap to be any good - go figure .

Get a Red Dot sight, They are great. Should be about $30.00 for a decent Tasco.   Besides if you have a Mini 14  you will need one...  :)

CDNN is selling Simmons Blazer 42mm red dots for $29.99.  Best deal I have seen.  These appear to be the same as the BSA and Tasco red dots.  I would order one myself but I already have a BSA 50mm. And now the obligatory comment; I'll use the BSA until I can buy an Aimpoint then I'll put it on my 10/22. Deucer01

29 bucks is a deal, The ones they have on the tasco site are inclused doesn't that make it kinda hard to get on target?

I have an A-3 upper for my AR-15 . It also has a normal front sight on  a 16 in . barrel .    If I buy one of those units from CDNN and install it on my A-3 upper , will  I be able to see over the front sight or do I need some kind of special mount ?

You just mount the dot on one of those cheap $ 15 B-square riser mounts, makes it easy to take on and off and gives a little height to clear the front sight base...I tried a dot on an AR and found it to be kinda useless for longer ranges but fun for close up plinking.,
Buy a real cheap dot like the BSA and try it before going berserk and buying a real expensive Aimpoint....

I have a Walmart tasco on my 10/22- works good. Walmart here gets them in 30-40 at a time- they go damn quick.

I have an aimpoint on my ar. But when I get a dedicated .22 upper it is getting the tasco.
