It still looks neat but I would like to do it better next time. Is there a trick to get them from the sheet to the gun?Attachment Attached File

Not really. You want fairly stiff stencils but you need to be able to apply on a 3D surface. It appears your stencils were really thin.

Couple of passes with a heat gun and maybe a sponge or other device to press the stencil material down into the surface irregularities?

If you mean keeping the stencils aligned properly: take masking tape and put it on the stencil sheet (on the exposed, non-sticky side).  Then peel off the stencil backing and transfer the stencils/tape to the object to be pained.  Press it down and then carefully peel the masking tape off, leaving the stencils behind.

I'm surprised that some of these companies selling stencil sheets, don't give transfer paper along with the more complex ones.

They could charge a little bit extra, but it would be worth it for the end user
