Got my lower back tonight.  I am very happy with the results considering how I did it (don't ask, you will probably laugh).  However, how do I know it's .003 inches deep?  Or am I worrying about to much?

I wouldn't worry too much.
A human hair measures about .0015, and a piece of paper is just under .003.

some numbers here might be a little off.

most people can generally see something @ about .005 (five thousandths) of an inch, so .003 would easily be exceeded by the engraver

I think .003 was kind of random. They probably didn't want people using paint or markers or the likes. You will "know" if it looks deep enough.

Well, it's clearly into the metal as it's good and silver where it's engraved.  And I can run my finger down it and feel it.  I was just comparing it to the manufacturer engravings and they were'nt nearly as deep.

Mine is 0.003. I had it done by a jewler. I would have got it deeper if I'd really known how light 0.003 is, but it's legal.

So did you have a little initial shock at first at what .003 was?

I had mine done at a trophy shop for ten bucks with one of those engravers that just
trace out a big letter and scratch the engraving into the metal to the size you set. Very
nice looking and very easily done. I was shocked at how shallow that depth actually is
at first but after applying a bit of paint from a paint pen over it the letters blend in nice
and show up well still.
