I need a load for 777 fffg powder in Lyman great plains rifle 50 cal round ball.

New manual max states 90 ffg and 70 fffg goex max. This new manual is for the rifle sold and made by Investarms.

Old manual max states 110 ffg and 90 fffg. goex max. This old manual is for the rifle sold by Lyman but made by Investarms.

I want to use .490 round ball with 777 fffg.

I want the hottest load possible.

Standard guidelines are 70-15%=60 777 fffg.

That seems like such a small amount.

Whats real world data?

I have an old (late '90s) Lymans manufactured Great Plains rifle in .54 caliber and have used 100 grains of fffg with a heavy lead bullet (not round ball and since it was 20 years ago I don't remember the actual brand / name).
Holy Shit, I did a sighting shot prone with the bottom edge of the stock in my shoulder muscle and I thought it had punched a hole in the muscle when it went off!
Standing with a normal shouldering stance, it wasn't bad at all.

Probably not what you're looking for, but it reminded me of that afternoon.

777 will be a little hard to ignite with a standard cap. It will be pretty hard to clean at the patent breach too.

With that as a consideration  I'd start at about 50-60gr and work from there,

"reading" the patches will tell you when enough is enough.

Those old PRB loads didn't kill with speed, accuracy and repeatability are what you are after, amazing how well a PRB kills stuff.

The folks on the above forum are great for information etc

I load 80 grains of FFFg 777 under a .495 round ball and pillow ticking patch in my TC New Englander .50 cal.

Shoots well and doesn't beat me to death.
100 grains is nothing but fire, smoke and hurting shoulder.

yea i have the 50 cal investarms that about 30 years old ..

Hunting load is 90grs of 2fg or the same volume with 777 or prodex

for target 50-75grs is about normal load range with good accuracy..

BP and substitutes go by volume but what makes it confusing is the volume is in reference to to volume N grains of Swiss 2Fg powder takes

Stay with volume and get one of the good clear graduated cylinders with swivel pour spot

Start at 50gr equiv and work up in 5gr increments chasing accuracy

your best accuracy will probably not be the "hottest" load.

start at 60 and work up.

my sweet spots in most of my rifles are usually 60-75.

the gold standard is 10 yards for 10 grains of BP.

60 gr of BP will zip a round ball in the front shoulder and exit the opposite ham on a whitetail at 70 yards.
a round ball is remarkably efficient at killing things.

My 4H shooters use 60gr by vol or less. A couple of them will outshoot most grown men with their Lyman GPR’s and a .495 prb., offhand at 50 yds.
60 is plenty for deer size game as well.

OP, Not the same rifle, but with the Goex shortage, I worked up a patched round-ball load of 60 gr 3f 777 in my Traditions Kentucky .50 using a 209 Mag-Spark adapter. It ignites reliably, and I wouldn't go any hotter with the 777 - 60 is enough don't push it. The accuracy was not the same as Goex (but still minute-of-deer-killzone at 50 yds). It left the dreaded "crud ring".
