I bought a M1898 30-40 Krag that will be here tomorrow.  I'm not a reloader, so
can I shoot off the shelf ammo in it safely?

Yes. Modern .30-40 is designed with the Krag in mind.

I would recommend you check the head space before you fire it.  These are single lug design and many do have head space problems.  Look for stretched brass and signs of head separation.

This was the first US Military rifle designed for smokeless powder, modern ammo is GTG and not cheap.

hell even in the 80's when I worked at a gun shop it seemed like they only made rem .30-40 krag ammo once every two years.  

if you can find it, buy a couple boxes.  Then learn to reload. Then load cast bullets for fun.

This is the truth...my 30-40's love them some 220 grain gas checked cast loads!

Check the bolt lug to see if there are any checks.
