I had a stock lost in shipping by Post Office.  I had insured it for $100 because I figured that was what it would take to get a replacement from Numrich or Springfield Sporters.  Well, you have to provide proof of the value for the item after a certain dollar amount when making a claim with USPS.  THe stock came off a surplus rifle that I bought.  

This will not be the end of the world, but it has really got me to thinking about if I had a major loss.  My insurance company pays replacement cost here in Texas.  I have taken pictures of all of my firearms.  I keep the bound book for serial numbers and such.  

I have been logging the bound book like I am supposed to, but I have NOT been keeping invoices.  I don't normally print the invoices when I buy online.  I just never thought about it.  Before having the C&R, I kept a serial number list and pictures in a firesafe.  Now I have the bound book and the serial number/picture list on a jump drive.  

So, what do you do to keep records of your firearms?  Have you ever had to replace losses from theft or fire?  Did you have to provide proof of purchase price?

USPS finally settled on my missing rifle stock.  I sold the stock for $40.  I insured it for $100.  

USPS said that the value of the stock is $40 because that is what was paid for it..........Okay, I understand the reasoning.

They then depreciated the stock by 10% and wrote me a check for $36.

I would recommend shipping by UPS or Fedex.

Why did they depreciate it?

"because of the age of the item"

That's f'd up....you sold it for $40...so it's worth $40.
