First C&R purchase leaves me with two dumb questions:

1. Is there an easy way to get this cosmoline crap off?

2. Is 8mm Mauser and 8X57 the same thing?

I thought I knew alot about guns, but this surplus crap is a whole new realm! Thanks in advance.

Directly proportional to how hard you work. I don't know of any "quick" way.

2. Is 8mm Mauser and 8X57 the same thing?

What'd you get? A Yugo? Nice rifle and hard to beat for the money. You'll be competing in Military Benchrest before you know it.

I doubt it's real "Cosmoline". More likely stiff grease.. You'll know it when you run into true 30 year old cosmoline, when the chisels come out.

Strip it down, and set it in the sun, sitting on a cookie sheet. The heat (at least in Arizona) melts most of the mess off. Finish with hot water, soap, and a toothbrush. Rinse with very hot water, and oil the metal parts.

I'm using that Orange cleaning stuff...

Don't let the pleasant smell fool ya that stuff is killer on petroleum based products-you should see what is did to some asphalt tiles in my old apt. when I left it on overnite.

You are from Oklhoma, use that brilliant yellow orb in the sky. Just set it out in the afternoon sun for a few hours. Every half hour or so go wipe that nasty oozing cosmo off and there ya go. Oh, the oven cleaner easy-off works well too.

Or

Fill the bathtub with very hot water and Dawn and soak.

Simple green, Kerosene, and mineral spirits work great on cosmoline.

Use "Oven Cleaner"(Easy-Off) toget it off.
It's made to remove heavy, stuck on, baked on grease. saw an article on it in SGN.
