You can convert it... If you have a 22LR or Mag, doesn't matter.

For converting a 22LR to 17HMR, you would have to drill and cut some of the receiver on the 22LR but, it can be done. For the 22LR you would also need a Mag magazine and a 17HMR barrel and shim.

For converting a 22LR to the 17HM2, you would need the HM2 barrel and a heavier bolt. (Without the heavier bolt, you would likely see seriously ruptured brass...)

For converting a 22Mag to 17HMR you only need a barrel.

ETA: Head on over to RFC to learn what you need to know.

Why would you go from a 22LR to 17HMR? If you want a HMR go buy a 10/22 mag gun/receiver and go from there. Look for "Andrew" on RFC and Marlinowners.com. He's full of knowledge and will hook you right up.

.17 Mach 2 can be used in .22LR actions after being rebarrelled.  The .22LR and .17 Mach 2/HM2 are the same length, just as .22 WMR and .17 HMR are.

With a stock 10/22 in .22LR, you will need to rebarrel for the .17 HM2.  But that's it, though as Bly stated a heavier bolt might be required.  Pressure spike during discharge.  For .17 HMR you'll need a 10/2 magnum and rebarrel with a 77/22 barrel in .17 and use a shim to fit it properly.  That's about it.

you could also get a 96/17 barrel for the magnum receiver. AFAIK the 96 series and the 10 series use the same barrel design.

Also, if you have the .17HM2 barrel you can also fire .17 Aguila round in it too. .17 aguila is mo bettah than the .17HM2, but having the ability to shoot either is a plus IMO.

I don't think anyone has more 10/22s than that guy....it's insane.
