I want to get one of these shotguns for home protection but not sure which to get. I'm hoping someone on here can tell me with no bs which I should depend on to protect my family and myself.

Either one will do you well. If your a lefty I give the edge to the Mossberg. Don't get into all the extras, just a base 500 or 870. If you get serious about competition or other things later look at add ons.

This months American Rifleman also has a great article on the Mossberg has used by the military.

The Mossberg Model 500 has a cast aluminum receiver with stamped and plastic internals.
The Model 500 has a history of breaking the plastic safety.
Other than that, you can expect a service life of "about" 50,000 to 75,000 rounds.

The Remington 870 has a forged and milled steel receiver and heavy duty steel internal parts.
The Remington doesn't break anything.
The service life is "about" 250,000 rounds.

The Remington is built much tougher.

If this comparison is going to be tacked, could the topic be modified to include the 590 series from Mossberg, i.e., 870 vs. 500/590 (as well as the correct spelling of "[d]ifferences")?

Great comparison. However I would like to see a comparison between the regular 500 Mossberg (50411) Special Purpose Persuader/Cruiser and the 870 Express Synthetic because I think that the budget minded consumer would be looking in to these two models most.

Questions I would have would be:
1. Looks like the Mossberg 500 standard holds 5+1 and the 870 holds only 4+1?
2. How easy/expensive is it to change out the plastic safety of the Mossberg and replace it with a steel one?
3. The 870 can come with a mag extender but can it be removed easily? Does it come with everything necessary to remove it or would I have to buy a different spring etc...?

#2 is very important to me because I had a 500 way back when and I got rid of it when the plastic safety broke.

I am now looking into getting another shotgun for general use and I have narrowed it down to one of these because I would use it for home defense and possibly hunting. So since I may use it for hunting it would be nice to have something that I can just simply change to a different barrel and off I go.
