... because building the 12 gauges has been fun, but this one will be for my girlfriend. I have the receiver and magazine tube coming, but what parts of the 870 don't care if it's 12 or 20 gauge? Obviously the barrel won't interchange, but is the trigger assembly the same for both? And the stock?

It depends on which frame you build it on. The LW parts wont interchange with the regular size ones butother than that I believe the stocks will be the same, not sure though.
