I recently saw a Star Super-SM in .380 at the gun store. I really liked the size of it and the fact that it's almost a 1/2 size 1911. My wife has a P22, but I would like her to have a better defense gun or at least something to work up to a 9mm (it's also a good excuse to have another gun).

Anyways, the old, parts-shy Star was not the gun for us. Does anyone or his wife really like a .32 or .380 that's bigger than a Beretta Tomcat, but more serviceable than a Star? I'm wondering about unique stuff, not Bersas, Walthers, or even J-Frames.

My wife's first CCW gun was a Star S -- a much better little pistol than it had any right to be, even in .380.

I'd recommend going straight to the 9mm, but that's your/her call.

Bersas are a great .380s but, since you said you aren't interested in one and want something less common, how about a Walther PPK or a Mauser HSc?

The problem is that most of the 380's are pretty small guns. The 380 is still a pretty "snappy" cartridge in a small gun. Have you considered the steel framed Kahrs? The K-9 might be a good choice. Smaller size, but still enough weight to buffer some of the recoil. Is the size the issue?? Grip size?? Weight??

Just a thought.

My dad has a Browning BDA that he really likes. I thought the controls were too small and the grip was too fat, especially for a female hand.

The Mauser looks interesting - like a predecessor to the Sig 230/232, which also seems like a valid option. Other guns I've considered are the Colt 1903 pocket, H&K P7, and Walther P5.

I like smallish, unique guns. It's a nice bonus if wifey gets to enjoy it, too.

Greetings and happy Friday,
I also recommend the Kahr series in either the MK9/PM9, or the K9/P9. Since it's for a lady I must definately mention this S&W 3913LS. You could also use the regular 3913 or 908 models. There's also a 3913TSW pre-rail which utilizes a bit shorter grip. I'm actually in the process of getting one of those right now.
Maybe the Springfield EMT perhapse or the Walther PPS, although I think Walther's feedramp needs to be reworked since mine(now sold) had issues feeding wide mouthed hollow points. There's many choices, just make sure it's a quality pistol.

I just bought my fiance a p2k. we'll be making a range outing this weekend- she's tiny and hasn't shot before, i'll let you know how it goes.

The Star SM Super is a great little .380.

It's rugged, all steel, and reliable.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if you needed to find parts, but they are around (Numrich has some). Also, there's a vendor on Gunboards (user name STAR) that sells OEM star parts.

My brother picked one up as his first handgun, and it's still one of his favorites...of course his is a shiny pimp version...still looking for pearl grips

If you think she might be ready to move to 9mm, the STAR BM is a neat pistol. Just slightly smaller than a Colt Commander, it's all steel and soaks up the recoil.

They're pretty handy...

I use to have a Beretta 84 in .380. It was a nice "little" gun, but now a days you can get 9mm in the same size, or smaller size, package. It always went bang and had almost no recoil. My better 1/2's gun is a HK P7M8. She picked it, errr kind of. Actually, she wanted MY P7M13, but that was not going to happen.

get her a small revolver. ruger SP-101 in .327 mag, or a SW J-frame. cant go wrong with that.
