Suggestions needed for a .40, I need something compact. I'm interested in Springfield, H&K and Sig, but I'm open for suggestions/opinions.

Sig 239? Seems like a nice compact single stack CCW pistol, though I have not shot one.

Isn't there a new compact HK coming out? I thought I saw one at the Shot show.

I think the subcompact XD only comes in 9mm

I have heard nothing but good things about the HK USP40 in fullsize or compact. The HK USP40C is said to be very reliable, and the people that I have talked with sware by it (two sware by the USP, one carry's it as his issue sidearm for LE, the other uses it as a CCW).

The HK model that you are probably talking about is the P2000, but it is only coming out in 9mm at the moment. Though it isn't due out until this summer as the reports have said.

I'm a big fan of the Kahr, but the 40S&W is not the most fun shooting compact, at least in my hands.

A really enjoyable and somewhat compact is, as mentioned above, the SIG P239. A very controllable, accurate, reliable, and robust pistol.

Another smaller pistol that is quite a value (I always see them for less than $200), is the Astra A75. Unfortunately, they don't have ambi safetys, a consideration primarily for southpaws.

Okay, so I'll check out the Spingfield XD's, HK USP 40 and the Sig 239. At least I've narrowed it down to models at this point. Kahr was not one of my choices, but I'll check them out too.

Thanks for suggestions, I'm still open for more.

I have shot a friends SIG 239 and it is a good one. Very accurate and not unpleasant to shoot. You might also want to look into the CZ compact .40. It is one of the best feeling guns in the hand that I have shot and the gun has a lot going for it carry-wise and price wise. Hope this helps.

The Sig P239 in 40 S&W is a fine weapon, also for $150+/- you can obtain an extra barrel chambered in 357 Sig...same gun/two cartridges.

I like the feel of the P239 it just fits my hands well. I like to add an after market rubbery grip like Houge offers, the one piece type with finger groves $20+/-.

H&K USP Compacts are perhaps the finest firearms on the market.

I'll cast a vote for a Kahr in .40 (although I prefer the 9mm Kahr with a steel frame). Those little pistols fit my hand perfectly and would make fantastic CCW pieces (even better than a Vaquero). Plus they are made in the USA.

How about the S&W 4013 or Chiefs Special 40? They're both pretty slender, and easy to conceal.

If you're up for pain, see if you can find a Kel-Tec P40. I don't think Kel-Tek makes them anymore, though.

GLOCK G27

9 + 1 rds in standard config, 10 + 1 with grip extender that gives you a full grip, takes 13 rd G23 and 15 rd G22 mags, both of which they make sleeves for to give you a full grip.

Goes bang every time you pull the trigger, never goes bang if you don't (drop safety, etc).

If you must have a .40, I suggest skipping the Glocks (I don't like them. They eat my hands) and the Smiths (their autos lately suck) and trying:

USP .40 Compact
Walther P99
Sig 229
Sig 239 (hard to hang on to under recoil though)

I've got both an HK USPC and Sig P229 in .40. I love them both, but they are a little too large to carry unnoticed in the warmer months (sans jacket) so I just stick with my Kimber CDP Compact II 1911.

The XD40 is a nice gun, but it's about the same size as the others so it's a no-go for me. Lately I've been interested in the Kahr line of compacts. They seem to be a little smaller in both overall size and width.

Thats the HK P2000 subcompact.

First production delivery is slated for the latter half of 2004, first to European police units, so it may be some time before the gun is available for sale in the United States.

It does exist, but it will probably be a while before we can get our grubby little fingers on one. :(
