Neither. The handgun is a weapon of convenience and all are a compromise. Intruders in my home will be met with rifle fire.

Why a rifle? A 12 Gauge with 00 buck is the best when it comes down to knockdown power.

Anything is better then nothing... I would likely take the SIG out of the two BUT my nightstand gun is a as follows:
Glock 22 with internal Lasermax and ITI M3 LED The 15-rd 40 S&W mags provide good capacity with significant knockdown... The lasermax provides accurate aiming reference without the need to be looking down the sights... The M3 LED allows enough light to operate a phone or secure a family... The M3 Weapon light is quite capable of blinding an opponent inside the house or to illuminate them before firing... The weapon is the start of your planning... how you can accessorize it or equipe yourself to handle a situation in your environment is the real key to picking the best weapon for your home... I keep the Glock on top of a nightstand next to the bed and a Rem 870 loaded with #4 Buck within easy access. From there I also have my trusty SAR-1 with four loaded 30-rd 7.62x39 mags in case I feal I need more firepower... |

+Mucho on the shotgun. I think the argument goes something like "Try waking up in the middle of the night and fumbling with a weapon and getting a clean shot off". IMO the chances of a successful defense would lie with the scatter gun approach. For real CQ, you can also forego the use of deadly force with the butt end if warranted. |

hmm..
never really put much thought into it but my P228 is what sits on my bedside table with one of those kinetic energy flashlights. no battery worries just shake it and click it on. The Sig is what feels the most comfortable in my hand. It sits in condition 2 because I'm an early morning flailer...the last thing I want to grab while angrily fumbling for my alarm is an unholstered sig with a round chambered.. I need a holster! --------- with all that mentioned I'd gladly take a 1911 in 9mm with i cocked and locked. Contrary to the popular demographic I feel SAFER with a pistol cocked and locked than with a heavy DA trigger. the only reason my BHP clone isn't on nightstand duty is..... weight ban state 10 rounders (I need mags) It's only got about 300 rounds down the pipe and already I've had a few stovepipes. My hammer still bites and the last thing I want in a SD situation is another distraction. not a huge .45 fan... but that could be because my arms look like toothpicks and I've only ever shot corbon +P out of a commander sized SS colt 1911. I really need to shoot some soft shooting .45ACP out of a real deal 5" 1911. I have a feeling I'd like it.

My 1911 comes with 14rds of .45 in the magazines... I'll take it over a "puny" 10rd Sig. :p
I do like those Sigs though. Grandpa and Dad had them as service pistols If I had some free $$ back in the day I'd be sleeping with twins. Twin Sig P226s. Really, whichever the shooter is more comfortable with. My fiance... she'd be backing me up with the Moss 500 or the USPc .40 |

Considering my SA .45 has had some custom work done and the trigger pull lightened substantially, I opt for my Sig 220. I like the fact that the trigger takes a little more effort to pull in the likely event this hypothetical meeting becomes stressful. I believe an accidental discharge is inexcusable. The Sig may not be as target shooting accurate as my Sig, however for a "combat" pistol/sceaniorio it's top notch and plenty accurate, IMHO.

The best home defense weapon is the one you can get to.
At close range a hangun is best, pick your favorite then practice with it.For most purposes a 12 ga. shotgun loaded with bird shot is best,it will not penetrate walls and hit your kids or nieghbors.signed Rifleman55 |

WOW!! Is that a false statement! Have you tried this yourself for a penetration tests?? In the extreme close distances in a home the birdshot still housed the cup would cleanly go through dywall multiple times and strike whatever is on the other side. Your statement is false and simply untrue. Please don't say things that a person who might not know the differences would take for the truth. Shotguns as used in a home are more MIS-understood than any other weapon. No flame intended just voicing the facts. |
