Looking to fill out the top end of my collection before the new year and found a Ruger Super Headhawk in either .454 Casull or .480 Ruger. Seems that the Casull is the monster of the pair by about 600 ft/lbs.
What is the recoil and blast out of this hand cannon? The spec's on the Hornady rounds list +1800 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle - nearly a 12 gauge shotgun's worth. I suppose I can dump .45 Long Colts if the .454 rounds are too much

I have a raging bull. I like it alot. The ported barrel makes a difference. A .454 doesn't kick as much as a 45-70 handgun.
The recoil is what you would expect but it doesn't mame. Not that I am gonna fire 300 rnds in an afternoon out of it. You will like it! |

Go with the 454, as I believe the to be a passing fancy. I have shot most of the 454 though Freedom Arms single actions. It is a handful but, like you stated the ability to shoot 45 LC is a plus. The Super Redhawk id a good solid gun with a trigger left to be desired. There is hope for a Ruger trigger by the right Smith.

There was a comparison of these in Gun (eeeew too much recoil) Test last year. They preferred the Taurus because with the factory porting and better grip it's recoil was less annoying. They found that the 45 long colts were not terribly accurate out of these guns-maybe because they were designed/rifled for the faster 454 rounds?
I have been wrestling with whether I need one of these guns. You never know when I might run across an angry rhino that has escaped from the zoo... |

No, I haven't. A good friend at the time did, at a trade show in Chicago...had to be about 25 years ago. Back when Dick Casull loaded 'em with tri-plex powder charges...3 different powders to accelerate the projectile without going over-pressure. (Trying to jog my memory) My friend was a stout fellow, and he said it bent his back under recoil. I don't know offhand if the new loads are tamer, but the handgun offerings in that caliber, as of late, sure look beefy enough to take it. And all are good looking firearms to boot.

I figure the muzzle blast has to look like my new signature picture.
The local gun store (Turners) has them on sale for $530 a copy and I haven't bought a handgun in the last 30 days so the state gives me permission to execute by Second Amendment rights. |

I shot my friends scoped Redhawk in 454.
I did not hit anything but it was fun anyway! I would rather have it without a scope, but that is just me. Lee |

i have & its alright for 1 shot cause thats all your going to get. im 6ft 275lb. have shot a lot of 357/44 mags. but this one had me pointing to the clouds. it was more of jolt than 50ae. this was thrue a ported raging bull 8inch barrel that my bud tony bigun has. last spring he mounted a red dot on it 20rds. later the front lens cracked he sent it off for warranty i think it was bsa but back to your question it is a hand cannon i dont see one for me in the future but who knows mabe they will find a t-rex for target pratice see ya tnbladerunner

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk .454. The recoil is, shall we say, stout hysically Start off a few shots at a time and work your way up from there to avoid bad habits. Don't bother obtaining bulk discounts on ammo, you won't be shooting 200 a day.
And, No, I'm not a big guy (5'9" 140 lbs.) Edited to add..... I have a Leupold/Gilmore red dot on mine and haven't had a problem with about 150 rds. through it. |

I ran across a .454 that was single shot with a about a 3 inch barrel at the Houston gun show about two years ago. I had to ask the dealer what or who on Earth made this torture machine. He claimed that the gun was made for the Canadian Air Force to protect downed pilots from bear. Don't know if that is true, but the gun does exist.

The 454 is a piece of cake to shoot, buy it and enjoy it........You can shoot the Winchester 250 gr. ammo at 1300 fps and go into the nastier stuff later on as you get used to the handgun.........

I haven't fired a 454 but i have fired a .475 linebaugh. The owner said the .475 makes the .454 seem lik a .22 I dont know if thats true but the .475 was amazing!

BY ALL MEANS GET THE 454. THIS HAND CANNON WILL BLOW THE SIDE OUT OF A WATER FILLED BARREL. HELPS IF YOU HAVE A RELOADER VERSUS FACTORY AMMO. 25 CENTS COMPARED TO $1.00 PER ROUND. IT WILL FIRE HOT 45 COLT WITH EASE. EXTREMELY ACCURATE HAND GUN.

I've shot both the Taurus and Super Redhawk. I like the Ruger much better due to the fact that the barrel rises more and seems to roll with recoil, where the Taurus seem to push more rearward. Just my opinion, but the recoil isn't too bad with either. Just like old writers who stated the .44 Mag had severe recoil back in the 60's. Once you get used to id, its no big deal. By the way if you do get the Ruger, I would suggest a trigger job. I need one for mine, but I don't know who does them locally.

I shot a Casull single action before with Casull factory ammo. We were shooting it braced over the hood of my pick-up but stopped, I was convinced that the concusion was going to make the little cracks in the windshield split wide open. It has a lot of concusion, you can feel it in your body and face, I loved it. The gun always ended at 12 o'clock or 1 o'clock. You know it when the hammer falls! K-f@#king-boom!
