On a 1911 style pistol what is the advantage of not having a barrel bushing?

More weight on the front end of the gun and you don't need to fit a bushing to both the slide and barrel...cheaper to build. Downside is that when wear sets in you cannot compensate for it quite as easily as with the bushing. Good guns are built with both methods.
