I really like .45ACP and was thinking of getting a Smith or Taurus that take the 45 moonclips. Anyone have any feedback?

Lots of us here like the .45 a.c.p. in wheelguns. I have both the 1917 S&W (Brazilian contract gun) and a M625 and love 'em both. I personally do not care for the Taurus guns, but some seem to have good luck with them. In any case, get one of some sort...you'll be glad you did.

The 45acp is far too great a round to waste in a semi-automatic. Give it a try in a nice wheelgun and you'll be as close to the perfect handgun as you can get. I strongly recommend getting the Smiths over any others. My choices would be a M-25, 1917 or 625.

Both the M25 and M625 are N frame S&W revolvers so they are similar to the M27 (357 Mag) and the M29 (44 Mag) guns, if you have experience with those. You can also get half moons that hold 3 rounds or full moons that hold 6 rounds. Reloading with the full moon clip can be as fast as with an auto. I like the S&W M625 with a 5" barrel. I have never shot a Taurus so I can't comment it.

Thanks for the replies. I had a 629 Smith for a while that I liked. I sold it when my son needed some ortho work and I kind of miss it. I am a huge fan of the 45 and thought it might be fun in a revolver. I checked out a couple 625 models today. A used 1989 with 3" barrel and a new one with a 5" barrel. I liked the 5" barrel better but it cost twice as much. I also looked at a taurus with a 6.6" barrel. It seemed nice but only held 5 rounds and I am a bit concerned about finding clips for it. Seems like most gunshops carry moon clips. I will probably save up a little more for the 5" Smith. The Smith & Wesson website does have a cool new 45ACP snubnose pictured with a 2" barrel.

Where did you see the 3" 625, and what was the cost? I have one, and have several friends that lust after mine and want one of their own. As far as I know, these were just built the one year, and there are only about 500 of them. It's a great revolver, and the 3" is pretty concealable. I wouldn't part with mine.

I've had 'em and I love 'em. (Webleys and a 1917)
I even keep moon clips and at least a box of .45 auto rims around if I "come across" another one.
I think the 625 is the ultimate revolver in .45 ACP.

Anybody know if the Ruger Blackhawk with interchangeable .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinders is any good? I like the idea of having the .45 Colt for a woods gun, but .45 ACP for cheaper shooting.

The Blackhawk is a proven design. I've had three in .45 Colt. Never had the conversion package, but they keep re-releasing it because it is too popular to die.

Thanks for all the replies. wv_mntn_man I found the 3" 625 at a local shop in the twin cities. There are several on gunsamerica. Fron what I can tell they were only made in 1989. I think I might wait for the Smith ultra compact 625 snubnose for a short barreled 625 and get the Taurus .45 tracker with a 6" barrel to enjoy in the meantime.

I pretty sure that the "Model of 1989" on the side of the barrel does not mean the gun was manufactured in 1989. I think that model was made through the 90s. Same as the Model 25 which has "Model of 1955" or something like that on it. Those were made in the 60s and 70s.

I'm happy with my S&W 625, but after I ship it to the factory for a trigger job at the Custom Shop, I figure I'll be even happier.

Smith made the Model 625 in 1988 as a limited special run and called it the model of 1988. It was so popular that they introduced it in 1989 as the Model of 1989 in three barrel lengths. 3", 4" and 5" I think they cut back to producing just the 5 inch model in 1990 and they still make it today as the Model of 1989. I've seen a fair number of the three inch and five inch but have only seen one of the four inch. I had one of each for a while but now I'm down to just the 5 inch model of 1988.

The 4" is back in the S&W line up, WITH the stupid key lock however.

The 4" Mountain Gun would make a sweet carrying piece.

I have a chopped 1917 carry piece that I refer to as my "Indiana Jones" gun. 3" bbl, bobbed
hammer, imitation ivory grips with Tyler grip
adaptor. I kept the lanyard ring on it. New
front sight with a white bead, the fixed rear
has been hogged out for a better sight picture
and a matt black Guncote finish.

I have both a 5.5" convertible Ruger Blackhawk in .45 cal (love it) and a 5" S&W 625-6.

The Blackhawk is hell for stout, and while I don't use the .45 ACP cylinder much, I have used it and it works well. I can't swear that it isn't a little more accurate with the .45 ACP cylinder than it is with the .45 Long Colt cylinder.

The 625 is insanely accurate with 185 gr. LSWCs. The 625 has the absolute nicest trigger of any firearm I've ever handled.

They balance better for some people. Also, it's usually easier to find good holsters for 4" or 5" guns than it is for longer barrels.

A 4" or 5" revolver will have less muzzle blast than a 2" or 3" revolver. In .45 ACP, I can't imagine this would be as much of a problem as it is in say a .357 Magnum, but it's still an issue.

I still do not know the difference between 4 and 5" 625. I have many rounds down range with a commander and govt. model both. A revolver will be new to me and any difference between them I would like to know about.

5" is no longer going to qualify in the Stock Revolver catagory in IDPA.

5" 625s suck for concealed carry. You can have the grip up to your arm pit, or have your barrel exposed unless you wear a trench coat. Thats an exageration obviously, but 4" clears leather faster and conceals better.

I just bought a Taurus Tracker revolver. 6.5" barel, 45ACP. I put 80 rounds through it the other day. I'm fairly new to handguns, but was very impressed with it. It's a lot more accurate than my S&W 908. Although it's not fair to compare a 6.5" barel to a 3.5". I'm really hooked on wheel guns.

I had my gunsmith make an additional cylinder in .45ACP for my old 25-5. Now I can shoot the ACP round as well as the .45 Colt round. Best of both worlds! To my surprise, the 6 inch revolver is just as accurate out to 50 yards as the .45 Colt original cartridge is.

No one mentioned one of the best aspects of a .45ACP wheelgun. You can go to a range with all your ammo already loaded on moon clips. Then it's just 6Xbang, dump out,dump in, repeat as necessary i.e no reloading hassle,near interruption free shooting (hanging steel targets come in handy) rip off 3-600 rounds, then easy pick-up, go home happy. Just don't let the gun get too hot.

Chalk up another vote for the 625. I bought an awesome 4" skinny barreled 625 "Springfield Armory Commemorative" from gunwriter Wiley Clapp. It's the most accurate .45 I own. I bought a special edition 3" M-25, but it was a pain to find leather and didn't offer any real advantage over the 4".
There are also 1/3 moon clips that hold 2 rounds together and can be tossed in your pocket.
My cousin liked my 625 so much he bought the first .45acp Mountain gun he could find.

Cripes, you guys are dangerous. I was just reading the thread to learn, never having even considered owning a .45ACP wheelgun. Now I wonder how I've lived without a S&W 625 and I really want one.

I want one too. I just cannot decide which one. 4", 5", 5.25"performance ctr. If I run across a 4" gun I deem a good example with reguard to action, fit... Im going to be in financial trouble. [ once again ]

I have the S/W Model 625 with a 4" barrel. Very accurate. A one hole gun I would not part with. :)
