I recently saw this taurus. Apparently it shoots three diffferent things, .410, 45LC and a .44-40 rifle cartridge. I've never even heard of the .44-40, what kind of ballistics does it have? Its pretty unique and I think i'd be a cool piece to have if I had everything else.

Anyone have any experience with one of these? Hows the accuracy and reliability??

Introduced in the Model 1873 rifle, the .44-40 Winchester was once to the deer hunter what the .30-30 eventually became. Some cartridge historians have even said that the .44-40 killed so many deer that the .30-30 had been around for many years before it accounted for an equal amount of venison. In the old high velocity factory loading, the .44-40 churned up over 1800 fps with a 200 grain bullet which compares rather closely to the performance of the .44 Remington Magnum in Marlin's Model 94 carbine.

but nominally the .44-40 has a bullet diameter of .427-.429 while the .45 colt (long colt is a misnomer) is .452.  so i don't know how a revolver could fire both.  hmm

The .45 Colt & .410 have roughly the same diameter so that is no stretch of the imitation as long as the chamber has the length to accommodate the .410.

Some years ago Thompson Center offered a .410/.45 Colt barrel for their Contender line. They even had a "shot" barrel which was smoothbore to the muzzle then had just enough rifling to satisfy the BATF.

But to then expect the same firearm to handle a 44-40!!! Even if they include a cylinder chambered for it, that smaller bullet is going to be rattling down the barrel.

Other possibility is that the barrel is reduced to handle the 44-40 bullet. A .45 Colt would hit the forcing cone and swage to .429. Given the long cylinder it is possible and safe.

Trivia: Hatcher fired .45 ACP in a .30-06 Springfield. Wish he had a picture of a recovered bullet. A .45 ACP swaged to .308 must look like a pointer…

somehow that does not sound like a good idea to me

I fired a 44-40 out of one of my .45 colts by accident (it fell into the wrong ammo can) it fired alright, but was not accurate at all (to be expected) .45 colt will not chamber in a 44-40 at all.

I have seen 44-40 weaposn that also fire 410, and .45 colt that also fire 410.....
