I don't think there's anything smoother than an old S&W N or pre-N frame revolver. My Favorite is the 1917 in 45acp.
Anybody else like them big guns?

My first Duty weapon back in 81 was a mod 28. I still have it and it will always have a reserved spot in my safe, I someday will pick up a 29 to keep it company.

I've got a six-inch M-27, probably 1970s vintage, which is my favorite revolver, ahead of even my Python which is sweet too but not as sweet as the SW. The previous owner had some trigger work done to it and it is extra-slick. Probably not as "old" as the stuff subject of this thread.
Also a 629, in the "never sell" pile. But it isn't "old." |

My first duty gun was a M28 as well, but that was back in 1973. In April of '74 I qualified with a MKIV Government Model and never looked back. Still like N's and have a couple in the safe but carrying one concealed is a litteral pain in the back (lower). A 3" Round Butt M-24 and a 4" 625 are all that's left of many N-Frames that have lived here. By the way, the original M-28 was so warn and out of time by the time I switched to the 1911 I sold it. |

Just picked up a 4" 29....and got one of the last 27`s..new.....28 would be a nice add...

A couple of years ago I found a 27 for next to nothing. The outside looked like it had sat in a duty holster for twenty years, and the inside took literally 3 hours to clean, and that was after taking it down to the bare frame.
At that point I figured it was a good candidate for my first action job. Long story short, it shoots like a dream. You can not kill an N frame! |

A few years ago, my (ex)-father-in-law picked up a Smith & Wesson model 57 .41 magnum with a 2.5" barrel at a pawn shop real cheap... $175! He said most of the pawn shop's customers like semiautos and revolvers aren't very popular so he got it at a good price. My ex and I got divorced before I ever got a chance to shoot it.

Yup, love "N" frames. Just traded a mint 1917 for a Model 28...+ a lot of booty, of course. The 1917 looked like new, even the case hardening and grips were mint. I wanted one to shoot all the time and traded for the like new 28, which does one holers all day long! (the booty was 2 NIW Italian Beretta 15 round mags and a Butler creek 25 rounder for a 10/22) To me, that was close enough amongst friends.

I've really taken a liking to the .41 myself as well. I'm not sure just what I'm going to get, either a Taraus Tracker SS 4" ported, or a 57/58. I've reloaded for a friend's .41 and it's a VERY easy round to handle while reloading. It seems just the right size and responds very well to load development. The factory rounds are pretty hot, and expensive. Reloading, I've driven that cost down to only about $8/box. Far cry from $26/box. Also you can tailor the reloads to your barrel length and wind up with a mild report and recoil, compared to the factory stuff, and still keep things interesting.

As I see it, there`s good reason the 41 is still fairly popular.....I don`t care for taurus all that much...but must admit that one is intriugeing......the 41`s in proper load,parallel 44mags asfar as hunting......

I am also a fan of the .41 Magnum. It is my hunting caliber of choice for many years. I presently own 2 a S&W Model 57 with 8 3/8 barrel that shoots like a dream with the 210 gr. Sierra JHC bullets and a 6 1/2 Ruger Blackhawk wearing a 2X Leupold scope that was my Dad's. Last hunting season I took the Blackhawk out and shot a 6 point buck with it in memory of Dad. S&W N frame revolvers are my favorite wheel guns - one of these days I will find a nice Model 25 to keep my other N frames company.
