Not to belittle the 686 as I still own a 586 nickel and have owned several Ll frames. But have you tried a GP 100? I got a blued one not too long ago added a Wolff spring kit and now the trigger is smooth and light. I also noticed a lot less felt recoil than a L frame. Yes the Ruger weighs more and it is all in the barrel. Just a suggestion.

I too am a big fan of the GP 100. First trip to the range, I was hitting paper at 70 YARDS! (Not scoring well, but WTH... over open sights yet!)

The CDNN 686s are trade-ins IIRC.  They are no lock, hammer mounted firing pin versions that can be had in Excellent condition for $350.  You may get one without the engraved badge number for $20 more.

IMO, this is the best deal on 686s out there.
