It depends on the shooter. I have both calibers in Tacticals and USPCs and one is as accurate as the other. Generally I would say more people are more accurate with the .45 simply because the recoil is not as sharp as with the .40. Not that the .40 recoils more than the 45, only that the impulse is quicker with the .40. IMO the determining factor on which round is more accurate has more to do with the shooter than the cartridge so it boils down to picking your poison.

Agree with BigBore...while the guns are pretty much neck and neck for accuracy, I think the .45 shoots 'softer'...but then I usually prefer the 9mm anyhow so whadda I know?

Swimming against the grain a bit, *I* vote for the .45acp. When the .40 first came out, there was a great deal of anguish/teeth gnashing in trying to make it accurate. Granted this was 20 years ago & it's come a LONG ways since then, it still hasn't had the longevity & experience that the .45acp has.
Not to mention that the .45acp makes a bigger hole in paper, so a near miss is gonna maybe still give you a higher score than perhaps the .40 would. Certainly this perhaps only matters to the Camp Perry level shooters, but I have a phobia for accuracy. Possibly the best thing to do is for you to rent/shoot both calibers in the same sized gun so as to get a real comparison for your preferences? My .o2 |

Make sure you TRY both!
The 9mm/.40 frame is slightly smaller than the .45 and the grip on both is bulky. I have medium to large hands and ponied up for a .45 having never held one. As soon as I held that gorgeous shiny brand new H&K aloft I thought.... uh oh. 100 rounds later and my fears confirmed that it was just too damn big, (A first for me and I've shot a lot of different handguns) so it had to go. I'm now looking for a .40 Expert! |

I like the .40 S&W but there is nothing wrong with the .45 other than fewer rounds to a mag, a bit larger frame.

I own a full size .40 and a 45Compact. I am WAY more accurate with the compact 45 than my fullsize 40. FWIW
