I have been reading all the threads on 9mm vs .40 with much interest since I am having that same dilemma.  

I have read people make comment about a design flaw with the .40, and how some people wouldnt get a Glock at all unless it was a G19.

I want to get a new pistol for CCW and was considering a change to the .40 G23.  I have a Browning 9mm Hi-power, and think (today at least) I want something different than the 9mm.  

I dont want to start the whole 9mm vs .40 thing again.  I am confident a 147 grain 9mm +p will do the job.   My problem is, I dont know if I want to introduce a new caliber or keep everything standard NATO stuff.  I have a 9mm AR too.

All this being said,  I dont want to even consider the G23 if there are problems with the design for that caliber.  I also dont want to go .45 yet,  I am gradually working my way up and that will give me an excuse to buy another gun  So, problem or no problem, and what are your thought on keeping my calibers standard or adding another?  Sorry for the ramble, and thanks.

don't mind the anti 40 idiots. they're nothing but internet armchair komando. buy your glock 23.

I've shot the G23 a fair amount to know that when you pull the trigger, it goes bang.  Some people don't like the way a .40 recoils but if you're okay with it, you'll be fine.

Why the bad wrap on the G23 function?

I have shot a G23 and the recoil is not bad at all.  It is the same size as the 19 so there is another plus.  Buy it and shoot good quality factory ammo.

I'd almost say that .45 is milder than .40..  felt recoil wise.

I even had an instructor tell me that he'd rather teach a new shooter on .45 than .40.

The only .40 I have shot is the sub compact glock, and then turned around and shot a G19.  I really could tell too much of a difference.  I need to try it again before I buy, and this time with the same compact model of each.

The G23 is one of the best pistols out there.

Mr Wilson hit the nail on the head with stupid reloaders.  One person reads something online and then regurgitates it as the gospel.

I've had my G-23 for 11 years now and put almost 13K rnds through it.


Zero malfunctions and have never seen a Glock KB. Not being a reloader has helped some....maybe.


I honestly can't tell the difference in recoil between .40 & .45 acp. In fact, I really can't tell the difference between 9mm and 180 gr. .40 loads.


Get a G-23. You will like it.

probably cant handle the recoil of it.  if they dont like the 23 they will hate the 20 and 29.  all in all the 23 is a good gun.  however if you want some neat versatility with the firearm, and can dish out a little more money get the 20, they make .40 and .22 kits for them and probably several other calibers so if you want a freaky deadly round you can get the double tap 10mm stuff, or jump over to a .40 or if you want a really cheap day at the range throw in the .22 and for $5 you got yourself a few hundred rounds.  win/win IMHO.  anyway it is another option that may not have been thought of.

I just bought my 23 last Friday.  I was thinking the same thing you are.  All my other stuff is 45 or 9mm.  I didn't think I would want to add a caliber.  But I am really happy with it so far.  Only 2 rounds less than the 19.  Ammo is just a few dollars more, and the carry ammo I buy was actually cheaper for the 40 than the 9mm.

I have only put about 100 rounds through it, but right hand on the Bible not a single malfunction.  Recoil is a little snappy vs the 45, but definately not hard to handle.  After a few rounds, I had it in the 10 ring.

Go ahead and pick one up.  I think you will like it.

Reloaders and those that are "limp" might have trouble. I have a 19 and 2 23's (one for me and one for the wife). Approx 3000+ throught the .40's and not a hiccup, bout 5k throught the 9 and no probs.

Seriously, never seen a 23 with any problems and I have spent quite some time with them on the ranges, go for the 23 if you want a .40, if the recoil is heavy, try a tungsten guide rod and 19lb ISMI spring and some 165gr or 170gr fiocchi ammo.

I agree with Southernshooter when he says that the .40 in a 23 is a little snappier that a .45 . However I find that the .45 (G21) pushes harder in the web of my hand. Both are very controllable, but the G23 takes a touch longer to get back on target for me. I attribute this to my small hands and the Glocks being a bit slick. I am in the process of ordering some of those slip over grips for the G23 and hopefully a new G17. I have owned and carried a G23 for five or more years now and haven't found a better firearm/round combo for me yet. It is not as accurate as my Walther P99 in .40, but it has less muzzle flip.

If you get a G23 you can always swap out the barrel for a 9mm conversion if you don't care for the .40.

totally agree, go get the 23 that you want, I have had mine for 3 years and it has never malfunctioned with glock mags. the 29rd scrader mag on the otherhand... they are crap and stay away from them.

I've had my G23 for a year and a half. Never had a problem. Even with reloads. Just don't try to turn a .40 into a 10mm.
