I have a yugo sks.  It has markings for ranges from 100 meters on.  If you slide the sight elevator bar all the way back it stops at a mark on the sight that doesn't have a range number on it.  Does anyone know what range this is.  Is it 25 meters, 50 meters.  Do you zero the weapon with the sight on this mark at 25 or 50 to get the range marks to work properly?

This may be allegorical but I have found that both my AK & SKS shoot the best at 25 to 100 yds if I bring the rear sight up one numbered notch setting from all the way back.

Here's a little info about the SKS sight system.

www.surplusrifle.com/sks/sights/index.asp

Also lots of other good info on that site.

All the way back is the battle sight setting.
I believe that it is 300 meters.
