From what I understand, the bakelite furniture was used by the Bulgarians in the mid-80s up until fairly recently.

There was an issue of Small Arms Review this past year (or maybe last year) that showed an Airforce Security Policewoman walking patrol with her Bulgarian counterpart and he was toting one of the bakelite stocked rifles.

They were for the milled AK-47's in 7.62x39mm.

The bakelite was only used for the handguards.  Both fixed and folding stocked rifles were issued.

K-Var used to have the fixed stock set for sale but I think they sold out last year.

Romania and Poland also had bakelite handguards on some of their rifles, mainly AK-74's or variants of, like the Polish Tantal.
