There sure seem to be a lot of folks concerned with the aesthetics. "Correct this," "Correct that," "DON'T PUT THAT ON THERE!" etc, etc, etc....

I love my AK because it always runs even though I shoot dirty ammo and only clean it once a year.

We're not "concerned" with aesthetics, we already know our AKs run...we just like 'em to look good at the same time.  Anybody else having trouble with the site tonight?  Slow...triplicate posts.  Hmmm....

We had a DDoS attack last week, with like 60,000 guests on at one point. Numbers are low now, though, but a while ago I couldn't even get on.

Not trolling, just an observation. Some of the AR guys will ridicule people for not spending a minimum of $600 for an optic and mount. Some of the AK guys will ridicule people for not having the correct $0.79 part.

many of us enjoy having rifles that look true to the issued style.  the AR guys like to make boat anchors out of their lightwight carbines

I like plain AKs as well and prefer the look of wood stocks. However, IMO, synthetic is better for an AK you are actually going to use like an AK. The only thing on my rifle that is not original AK based is the pistol grip, and I even got flamed for that a few months ago. It doesn't bother me, because I can shoot better with it. It's just that some of the nitpicky stuff really cracks me up.

yes, there apears to be a growing lack of civility lately, even among some long time members (and higher ups).

Gerneraly the site is self regulating, and the last time I remember people starting to act like ass hats, most of them mellowed out after it was brought to their attention.

And to stay on topic, you cleaned your AK?!?!?!

Your supposed to just add 3 in 1 oil occationaly, AKs are self cleaning.

Saw grips are nice because you can carry more cleaning/survival gear than a AMD grip. And they fill the hand nicely. And they look good.

AR flash hidders actually hide the flash

Car stocks let you adjust to body armor, And fit in tight spaces better.

I probably wouldn't rail whore an AR, and I won't rail whore an AK either

But if your about to storm a crack house, it might be nice to have a laser, light, and front pistol grip, and underbarrel launcher. and a holo site

just please, no pressure switches (I hate cords)

And I'd like to draw everybodies attention to the CoC (That's "Code of Conduct) that you agreed to but didn't read when you signed up for arfcom. And remind you that it does apply to everybody equally. And that (subjective) lack of taste or other fashion faux pas are not liscence to personaly ridicule, deride, or make inflamitory personal insults.

I think there are a couple of fundamental reasons for the dislike of accessorized AKs.  Some legitimate, some less so.  First of all, I think people on this side actually seem to appreciate the history more and so things that detract from the "as-issued" appearance get bombed.

That said, there is an appreciaction for appropriately modded AKs.  There is a problem however, with finding custom gear that is made for the AK and has some quality.  Look how much crap you can get from Tapco?  Cheap junk!  You don't see many quality rails and those that are quality, just leave something lacking esthetically.  Rails on the bottom force you to use a vertical foregrip if you want to grasp something comfortable.  There is a reason however, why most countries didn't use a vertical foregrip on the AK.  The way the magazine rocks to lock.  That dictates angle and placement of the VFG.

While it shouldn't be a factor when looking at function, appearance becomes a factor.  Frankly, there are a lot of semi-functional mods that make me shudder.  I don't like them that much, but I don't have the hatred for CAR stocks that others do.  Why do they hate them?  Because it is an AK, not an AR.  I guess it would be like sticking a Ford 302 in a 1970 Camaro or a Chevy small-block in a Mustang.

My lack of desire to "modernize" the AK is the lack of well thought out, ergonomic modifications.  If someone was making mods to convert a  Tantal or AK74 to a Beryl configuration, then I might be interested. I think the Poles did a good job.  I like the Finnish M92 and M95.

Triburst isn't a troll...He just has a SAW grip rather than original pistol grip..That can be forgiven, because he said the magic words, he shoots better with it ..If it's the rifle I think it is,  that's the only mod he did to it other than making it 922 compliant and the grip he has helped him make it into evil configuration by adding enough US parts to it..

But if you post a pic of your AK that's been ran threw the Tapco mill be prepared for a razzing.

There are some ugly-ass AKs out there with a bunch of cheap shit slapped on them just for the hell of it. I am talking more about people catching hell for not having the "correct" muzzle device, pistol, grip, or something else that is actually FUNCTIONAL.

Like I stated before, I prefer the look of a classic AK. I would love to own a nice pre-ban Chinese 56 with deep blued finish and beautiful blonde wood. It would almost be too pretty to shoot. Almost. That being said, Mark Krebs does some pretty awesome things with an AK. His stuff seems to be well thought out and have a functional purpose.

Now, what I really love is a good SKS with 50 round duckbill, "ultimate" sniper stock, clamp on bipod, and 16x leapers scope. Now THAT is a thing of beauty.

I have a Romanian kit built on a Ewbanks receiver.  I swapped out the Romanian wood for a more Russian appearance laminated wood handguards and buttstock.  It looks like a stock, somewhat worn AKM.

Josh is finishing up a Polish PMKMS kit for me.  It will be a traditional underfolder.

I have an SLR-105A1 for my AK74 fix.

Finally, my original SAR-1.  This one I "modernized".  It has a Galil pistol grip because I like the feel and the look.  I added a Galil folder, not a Tapco Galil copy.  K-var plastic forend.  I threaded the muzzle and substituted a Phantom FS for the original slant brake I had on it.

So I guess I fall in both camps.

IMHO the best AK is the Polytech.

NORINCO named one of their AKs the Type 56S, but the NORINCO models do not have the folding spike bayo. The real original Type 56 had a folding spike bayonet. Most Polytechs have that folding spike bayonet, but they are named the "AKS 762" or "AKS 223".

I have a Polytech with spike bayo and it is the badass of the century. I have an M-16 style flash hider for it, but really, it doesn't even need that. Shiney chromed bayonet, vent holes in the gas tube, beautiful blond wood, deep black blueing... tastey. No way in heck I am screwing this gun up with any mods. The M-16 flash hider is good for control and such, but I leave it off while its in the safe. This has everything "original" including the muzzle nut, reciever dimples, wood and chromed (not blued) bolt and carrier. And, being pre-922(r), I could care less where what I want to add was made.

Thats the ironic thing, once you finally get a gun that isn't bound by 922(r) it looks so good that you dont want to add anything.

Nothing wrong with dressing up an AK with "quality" parts.  Mine all have actual AK furniture on them.  Nothing wrong in my opinion with a flashhider of U.S. origin, I could care less if a muzzle device on someone's AK is correct or not, I have a box of different types I change if I feel like it.  Nothing wrong with an ACE folder or Galil folder.  I like ACE stuff, have an ACE stock on an AR-15, I would put it on an AK if I wanted it.

I don't care if someone keeps their AK correct or not.  Mine aren't all original.  But when someone decks out any type of rifle with cheap ass plastic Crapco parts, rails, and lasers. Then I'm going to consider them an idiot.  Functional is one thing.  But some cheap ass bastardization is another.  If you are shooting with me and your gun falls apart on the firing line, you aren't shooting with me again.

I loves the Chinese AKs. I know a guy who bought a Legend last week for $500. I wanted to kick his ass when he told me.
