I've finally gathered all the parts for my RPK74 build.  Ted Marshall is reworking a RPK47 trunnion to RPK74 for me.  Now for the toughtest part...

What to do for a receiver????  I hate to go the Vepr route unless i have to...

As far as I know, the only difference between the 47 and 74 receiver is ejector and mag well opening, and I know plenty of people have built 74's on 47 receivers, so the mag well is not too critical..

any suggestions, advice????????

The OOW 74 reciever has good specs,I'm not sure if the original RPK74 has the reinforcing bulge on the right side like the 7.62x39.

I built a RPK74 on an OOW receiver...  It works well, but how authentic do you want yours to be and how much money are you willing to spend?  After looking at the amount of money I spent on mine, I should have held off just a little longer to gather the last bit of money for the Vepr donor...

I had a GT 1.6mm and a Polish trunnion, but decided to "attempt" to do it right and use a Romy modified trunnion with the bulges.

Just guessing, the Vepr donor receiver/mods will cost another $500 or so..??

Nodak Spud/DCI is gearing up to make a RPK47 receiver. I would highly consider that. It should be the closest thing to find at a decent price.
Link It's not on there, but the contact info is.

since CWtoyota is out of the picture, and joeken hasn't produced anything yet, seems harlan is my only choice.  i'd have to replace the ejector, or see if they will  supply it without the ejector and I can install a 74 ejector..,

I guess I'd have to live with the mag well opening i guess..

Can you build using a blank?  It's my prefered method in some cases.

nice looking receiver!  I've never tried a blank before, only flats.

I may just get the RPK47 receiver and send it to Ted Marshall to modify.  I'll have a damn fortune in the gun when i'm done.

I think you should turn that into a RPKS74. If I had the cash I would really consider this: Demilled RPKS74 kit
It's only money and you would have one of the only ones in the states. (I would think)

Nope, not the only one.

I have the 45rd 5.56mm mags as well.....

My plan is to modify a VEPR, and have a new barrel made using a long AR barrel....

Hmm, that's about the same amount K-Var was getting for theirs a couple years ago...  But they didn't have folding stocks but the barrel was there...  Do I need to spend this much for a folding RPK stock - probably not...

I emailed that guy in russia about that very same kit, It doesnt come with the barrel plus its like 150 bucks for shipping, i was thinking i could pick up the bulagian barrel assembly from K-var (400.00+) that kit (880.00 shipped) then buy a vepr for the doner receiver (say 600.00). With just over 2000 bucks you'd have a one of a kind RPK, but thats just too steep for me, then theres proper mags for em, who knows what they are going for. Hopefully someone will bring in a supply of RPK74 kits before the barrel ban is enforced, one can wish right!  McM

Those plum ribbed mags are around $300-$350 when you can find them...  It would be one of a kind - the lack of barrel hurts though...

I expect  around $1500+ in my RPK74 when it's finished....i have everything in line except the receiver....modify a rpk47 receiver or go with a Vepr...expensive either way..i think the Vepr is around $600 before modification...so, we're talking around $900+ for that deal, less what the leftover parts sell for...

i've got the 45rd bakelites, so the wood furniture is looking fine by me...

AL, I've got $3500 into mine, send me your email address via AR-15.com IM system, and I will send you some pics. Vepr is the ONLY way to go. trust me, my pics will convert you.

The kits he is selling are taken from deactivated RPK74Ms sold on the Russian civilian market.. They are actually the 5.56mm export version, but identical in every other way. I bought a complete deact direct from Russia for about $500 plus shipping. They used to be allot cheaper actually, but Molot no longer makes them. Mine (when I finally receive it) will get cut up and taken back to the US.

Mags are sold here in Germany, but the Germans want an Arm and a leg for them. If I were to sell them, they would end up being about $150 with a small profit. Expensive, but still cheaper then the same mags in 5.45 which go for $300-350 and are still not 100% correct; Plum versus true black.

The mags are actually made for a version of the Vepr sold on the Euro commercial market-

The Vepr 1B (or V) . Its an exact clone of the 5.56 RPK74M pictured above-

The drum in the picture is not actually a drum at all. Its a standard 10rd mag with an empty shell around it.

I tried to import one into the US for my own use, as it was cheaper and easier then doing a build. The ATF told me to get bent, no matter what modifications I made. Everything I would come up with an answer, they would come up with a new excuse.. Finally gave up after 4 tries. Here is the pic I sent them-

When you are talking about scrapping a $600 dollar rifle for a reciever 5.56 starts looking tempting as price goes.

You are not scrapping it.. I have seen people sell the parts kits from the Vepr for $200-250+.. You still end up with a $600 receiver though, as having someone weld the back to accept a standard buttstock will still run $200.  The cost is not the point.. Having a nice clone of an RPK is.

Maybe NoDak and Harlan can help you out with a 47 reciever with no ejector rail and no magwell cutout. The rail and magwell could be put in by you........as a 74

I'm going the Vepr route myself.  Yeah pricey but correct.  The problem will be finding some one to weld up the slant cut.  Krebs and Inrange don't do it any more.

Price has gone up considerably too... $350-$400....for the ass end weld job... He is now finishing up his second RPK74 build (mine was the first) and the work involved to do it right is quite intensive.
