Does any of this ammo still make it into the country. A friend of mine showed me a box of norinco steel core AK47 ammo. I asked how much?? Of course it wasn't for sale
 Anybody have any steel core ak ammo? |

I'd keep it around for novelty or a SHTF situation, but that's it. No use wasting steelcore ammo on paper targets when there are cars to perferate! |

I have 40 rounds of it on stripper clips. I'm waiting to hose a couple of bowling balls down with my SKS.

it' around at gun shows, not to expensive, considering how rare it it, and no more can be imported.
get it while you can, and don't waste it. |

I've got a bit of the Chinese stuff on stripper clips...........it's just sitting there, not doing anything.
I'll probably sell it and use the money for more shootable ammo. |

I bought 1100 rounds in the late 80's . Still have most of it since I stopped shooting it when the import ban went into effect. NONE of what I bought was corrosive. Headstamp: 31 (factory number) over 73 (year of manufacture). |

I have about 2300 rounds of the stuff I bought back in the early 90s, before they banned the import of it. A case of 1500 (two 750-round cans), plus another can from a case that I split with a buddy. I never have had the time to shoot it, plus they're stored in the back of a closet that's a PITA to get to. So they've survived untouched. I'd sell them if somebody was interested (and price right  ), but shipping would be a be-atch dueto the weight. |

As a Dealer frim 1992-1995, I had a bunch of it, it now collects dut in my attic, if the price was right, and someone was travelling through Indianapolis Indiana, I would sell a case or two also.

um, question. Does all silver tip denote steel core? I have some Czech 54R in silver tip and I'm dubious?

OK, now I see two guys from VA that would sell the ammo if the price was right. I buy it when the price is right. Now we just have to find the right price for both.
 Plus, we could always meet up at the next match at Cavalier.

That's about all I have to shoot. Back in the 80's and early 90's, I picked up a case or two at every gunshow I went to. Ran something like $79 a case of 1440 or 1500. They are corrosive primers but that's never been a problem.

It's perfectly legal for you to own the ammo. Well, on the Federal level, your state may have it's own rules. |

In Feb,1994 the BATF reclassified 7.62x39mm ammo with steel core bullets as armor pericing ammo. While it is not technically AP ammo as the steel core is made from soft steel which isn't hardened. So it doesn't penatrate armor like AP ammo does with it's hardened bullet cores.
The reclassifcation made it illegal for anyone with a federal firearms licence to sell to or import it for sale to anyone but govt. or law enforement agentcies. As long as you don't have a ffl you can buy,sell,or trade it without any problem. |

To the czechs (and maybe elsewhere), the silvertip just denotes light ball ammo as opposed to the heavier stuff. I believe the jackets are steel, but not the core. |

IIRC this happened because Olympic Arms planned to introduce a 7.62x39 AR pistol. The steel core ammo suddenly became armor piercing pistol ammo and was banned from importation. |

steel core stuff is over rated. It actual steel core is very soft steel. I have heard net rumors of the stuff blowing holes in half inch steel plate, but i have been unable to duplicate it.

The steel core I have will penetrete 1/4" plate @100 yds from an SKS. I doubt that it would penetrate 1/2" plate at that distance but I never tried that.

I've blown through 1/2" with steel core 200 grain 54R from my Mossin, but I havn't tried the 146 grain Albanian stuff from the PSL yet to see what it does to steel. I've also blown through 3/4" with .50 BMG AP but that was designed for it. This was all at 75 yards'ish though.

The other rumor is that they just used crappy steel because they couldn't afford the lead at the time...
API is a different beast than steel core, as has been noted here.... hardend and un-hardend...big difference... -C |
