I figure now that the ban is dead, I should get myself an AK and put a folding stock on it, even if I don't really want one right now.

What I want is the following:
Should look as close to a Russian AK-47 as possible
Must be 7.62x39mm
Must have chrome lined barrel
Should have a scope rail installed already... properly
Should have stamped and dimpled receiver, but I'll be flexible on that
Should be under $350, but I'll be a little flexible on that. Definately should be under $500
Should have at least a few American parts already
Does not have to be able to beat an AR-15 out of the box.
Does not have to come with a folding stock, but it would help.

Just got back from a fairly large gun show, but couldn't find any SAR-1s. The only Norinco I saw had a perm attached muzzle break and possibly a cut receiver.

Please post a source for the rifle if possible.

I really don't want to build myself. I don't want to spend money on a press and rivet squeezer and then get the whole thing refinished. I've done some riveting before with a bucking bar, and I'm not very good at it. Oh, and I don't have an air compressor anyway.

You stated a "Good" AK you could get a AMD-63 for 150.00 let moses put it togather with a OOW and G-2 trigger maybe $450.00.

You could go with an SAR-1 if you can find one. Maybe a converted WASR-10 in that price range. Right now SAR-1s are in the $400 range. I doubt the end of the ban will do much for AK prices as the 89 import ban is in effect, and a specific ban against all norinco products is in effect.

SAR1 is the answer, if you can find one. It has most of the features you want, & the price is in the mid 300's to low 400's. Good luck on the search.

SAR-1 for sure. They go for $300 to $350 in my area. Add a $72 RSA FCG and you won't have that nasty trigger slap either.

Hmm, maybe I'll just go back to the show tomorrow and buy one of the WASR-10 "hi-cap" rifles.

WASR, they have been going for about $300 at shows in this area, they go bang when you pull the trigger everytime, and they look just like an AK. They are not the best looking rifles but they function as well as any other. As far as close to a Russian, wich Russian? There are many "original" Russian AK variants, and just like all other commie variants there are variations between rifles even in teh same series, as a matter of fact I get tired of hearing "I want one just like a Russian", if that is waht you want then buy a Saiga, a dremel and sixty bukcs worth of parts, that is as close as you can get.

Some dremel time? Have you done one of these? There's a lot more to it than a few swipes with a dremel, my friend. Better to buy the hi-cap model.

I thought other than expanding the magwell the wasr-10 was the same as a Sar-1???
Sorry if i was mis-informed but I'm still also relatively new to ak's. Both are 7.62x39s,
gas-operated, semi-auto etc...whats different?

The conversion goes like this. The single stack mag has a catch on it in a diffrent position than the regular double stack mag. If you just widen the well and use the catch on the rifle the way it is, the double stack mag will be too low. The bolt will go completely over the carterage and not load it. The spacer under the trigger guard in the single stack rifle is thicker and the pivot hole in the trigger guard for the mag catch is in the wrong position as well. You must replace the selector stop plate, the trigger guard, open the mag well, dremel the trunion, ( which will take two hours all by itself, the trunion is harder than hell. Bring at least 4 carbide bits, you might need more ) and probably do some work to the feed ramp on the trunion. The single stack uses the front edge of the mag to angle the bullet toward the chamber, the double stack uses a plate riveted to the trunion. Got it? OOPS not done yet. The feed block on the bolt might be too narrow to reliably feed from the double stack mag. A new bolt probably will be necessary too.

Opps sorry Suburban I missed about 3-5+ hrs work and this list of extra parts needed have.
Now I just need to price all the above and see if its worth 150 bucks, probably not. But maybe it'll snow a lot this winter ? lol

Parts, with shipping and the cost of the phone call About $90.00 My time as a gunsmith is $25/hour @ 4.5 hours, total, about $202. Most folks do not have the tools to do rivets for the trigger guard, the skill to lay out the exact locations for the mag catch pivot pin, etc. Sub needs the hi-cap gun. He's way far ahead with that choise. I've done one conversion and helped a friend with another. I won't do one again. It's cheaper to get the right gun up front for most folks. If you spot a dumbhole maddi or sar for $250, get the wood stock anyone can put on, american pistol grip, and you're done.

I did some searching here and on akfiles.com about the WASR-10s. No one really had anything bad to say about them, besides minor mag wobble, so I picked one up. $330 for a "hi-cap" with a 20 round and a 30 round. Everything seems to be straight, and finish is okay. Shots on the test target were centered, FWIW.

Got a Tapco US sidefolder while I was there too, and put that on in a few minutes. Quite solid, fits me better, and I can get a cheek weld.

Damn thing was full of sawdust, or some such junk, and unidentifiable red stuff that I guess was some kind of lubricant or rust preventive. A couple ounces of Simple Green, some PC Duster, and CLP on the moving parts, and it should be good to go.

V47s sound pretty good, but no scope rail. VEPR was tempting, but for over $500 it still makes that cheap sounding "schlick shlack" noise when you rack the charging handle.

Just heard on "Tales of the Gun" that an AK can be had for $50 in Africa, but you can't even touch a resonable replica in the U.S. for under $400, hmm.

Now if my FAL receiver will just come in from FAC, I can relax.... and pray that the next AWB has a grandfather clause.
