It's time for me to buy an AK (7.62x39), but I don't know which one. I want the legendary reliability, of course, but I also want as much accuracy as I can get.  1-2" at 100 yards (prone with iron sights) would be nice. I also want to be able to use most common spare parts, mags, and add-ons (including maybe a scope mount eventually). After all that's settled, my next concern is weight - I want it light.

Any suggestions for a clueless newbie? Should I just buy a Saiga and be done with it? Or what about a VEPR?

My rested, scoped VEPR K .223 is capable (more than I am hehe) of wonderful accuracy..........light it ain't.

Quoted:
a saiga conversion in .223 is the only rifle that will end up coming close to meeting your expectations in weight and accuracy.

unless...you want to go pre-ban and try the valmet or galil rifles. neither are light, though.

CampyBob,

If I were going to buy just 1 7.62x39 AK...Which should it be?

Thanks

Ok, maybe 1-2" @ 100 yards was a little optimistic - I'll save that for my bolt guns! I can live with 3-4".  5-6" is pushing it though.

It looks like the Saiga with some straight-forward conversions will be a good gun for me - accurate (for an AK), reliable, and will take high-cap mags. Or am I missing something?

If you're interested in the classic AK look and 7.62x39 caliber,I'd have to recommend the Arsenal SAM 7.
BTW,Welcome To The Dark Side!

For a first rifle in 7.62x39 ..And one you will Not be dissappointed in... A SAM 7 or it's Cousin the SLR101S  . The SLR101S is alittle cheaper..It comes with no cleaning rod  and no cleaning rod attachment under the barrel. I paid $500 for my SLR . A SAM will be alittle more $550-$650 . But look around ..Sometimes you can get a steal... They are sweet... WarDawg

"I'd have to recommend the Arsenal SAM 7"

That what I want to get.  But I can't find one.
FAC and Aim Surplus don't have any.

Does anyone know of any other online sources?
(with good prices, of-course)

No offense, but for what most of us use an AK for, ie. blasting/plinking, just about any version would do. I understand the desire for the best of a kind, but as the old saying goes "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

I have a US parts converted MAK90 and an SAR 1. Both will shoot 5-6" at 100 yards which is about all you need with one of these.
