i guess 'sam' (short for samantha, my wif'e big, black lab) was sleeping in the tall, cool grass and did not hear the tractor and brush hog coming.
i haven't heard which of my wife's family member was driving the tractor, but it doesn't matter...it wasn't anything that could have been avoided. sam was 14 or 15 years old. she was getting old and tired, but what a way to go out. i'll miss that dog. gotta go look for a dog pound lab to adopt. |
i'm sure she died quickly.
i doubt there was enough left of her to bury. brush hogs are very mean devices. that dog could kill groundhogs as good as any dog i ever saw. my father in law once ran over his troy-bilt roto tiller with a brush hog. he left it set out all winter and when it came time to cut down the weeds the next spring.... |

Feel for you
I ran my old dog over with the truck because his hearing was gone and I didn't know he was behind the truck sleeping when I backed out. GM |
You have my deepest sympathies. May he rest peacefully in doggie heaven.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
We consider our dog a family member just like the rest of us. Over the years with as many dogs that we have had the pleasure of owning, It is hard when you lose one. Each have their own personality just like people do. It's easy to replace a dog, but hard to get another like the one you lose. |
You and your wife have my condolances as well, that's just horrible. Rest assured she went quick.
Most probably it was quick and painless. Messy, perhaps, but quick and painless is the best way to go.
Dogs are the best pets. If you die, your cat will be gnawing on your carcass by the third day, but your dog will lie down beside your body, never leave, and starve to death, if nobody intervenes. Dogs know loyalty, cats know only handouts and freeloading. CJ |
that must be why statistically democrats own more cats than republicans!
BTW, sorry to hear about your dog. it's always bad when you lose a member of the family, whether 2 or 4 legged. |
...damn... I feel for all involved! Your poor wife, the tractor driver....gheeze...
Soo sorry to here it Campy..
Although, if she did'nt hear the tractor and brush hog, she may have allready been dead, of old age, in the grass??? Still sorry to hear of your loss.. |
Damn,................................................sorry Campy.Losing a good Dog is like losing a Family member.
I feel for you, I aint much for emotions and stuff, but you get used to a good dog after a while and it sure sucks when they go.
you can got to petsmart on Sundays they always have a lab or two, or also look on the net for lab rescue
sorry for your loss we have a new German Shepard and I cannot image losing him. |
Damn Campy, that is sad story. Sorry for the loss of the family member, and sorry for your wife. I know how bad my wife took it when her dog died.
They really do become part of the family....... |
Sorry, but...
Dead doggie stories SUCK!!! I hate hearing about that stuff! Sorry for your loss, hope you find a great pup!! |
Please accept my deepest condolences Bob. And convey them to your wife as well.
I love Labs. Most are better people than most people. And one that has been in the family for many years is as dear as any child. |
Sorry to hear that, but at least it was an accident and it wasn't some arsehole running over a chained dog just for kicks or something like that. |
I've sat here and typed 5 or 6 responses and nothing sounds right. I've mowed over fawns and countless other animals but nothing comes quite this close to home.
Damn, Campy!---- You'll deal with it. Do it well, I know you will!!!!!!!!!!! Thin |
To me, a dog is as much a part of the family as a kid is.
I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's dog Campy. Take care. |
Sorry for your loss CB, it's a toughy for all involved.
Having done my share of bush hogging, I also believe that perhaps Sam was already gone. Lot's of noise, thrashing and thuds in the air and on the ground which I believe would wake up even the most heavily sleeping dog. I'd want my family to believe that anyway, for whatever comfort it brings. |
Sorry about the dog.his Even though the deer was less than a year old it still amazes me that it couldn't tell a tractor was coming.
Justin |
young deer will just lay and try to remain hidden. even some older ones do this. farm equipment often gets deer tangled up in it.
rain, you may be right. i hope sam went off to die and that's just where she layed down for the last time...dunno. i'm gonna go over there later and see if ther's anything left to bury. we just got 2 to 3 inches of rain and the roads are washed out and flooded...it might take me a while to get out. |
I'm sure that will be a source of fond memories for years to come! My last dog was a Great Dane/ Dalmation mix, what a giant goofball! He had a passion for groundhog hunting, cut in on my territory, but nothing like watching a dog do what dogs do best! Thought about this thread all last night, someone else said it best "dogs are better people than most people". Best wishes man, I know it's quite a loss. |
Damn campy, I hate reading threads like this. I also believe that sam had already passed on. even my shit for brains chow knowns to get out of the way of the bush hog. now if i can only get him to quit playing with skunks i'll be a happy camper. mmk

Sorry to hear about Sam.
Having had lots of dogs in my lifetime, we used to raise miniature shelties and kept a lot of them, I've seen a lot pass on. I hate putting them down. Never gets any easier to see em go no matter what the end. In the last 5 years alone we've had one choke to death, one died after I ran over the little guy, one was creamed on the interstate, one went via cancer, and my favorite- a German shepherd border collie mix that was the best damn coon dog I ever had- just disappeared. While hearing about Sam's passing seems to put me in a dampened mood, it has brought up a lot of great memories of my pups. That's what I hold onto. Hopefully you have lots of good memories of Sam. Take care. Sly |

Erased my joy of getting a perfect Garand earlier today.
Sincere condolances. |

Sorry to hear of the loss of your wife's dog!
It's always a good thing to check out areas where you are going to be bush-hogging beforehand! I have found many things that I would never have wished to run over... It's more of a precaution for the tractor and bush-hog, but it's good to see what else you may uncover. Eric The(Careful,SomeOfTheTime)Hun |

Amen brother. My deepest sympathy to you. Dogs are one of God's greatest gifts to man. |
thanks for the kind words, guys. i appreciate it.
eric, the areas brush hogged have been done for many decades. my father in law is the guilty culprit that leaves stuff lay and then hears it jam up his machinery...heheh! he has been that way for...well, forever! me, i take it slow and easy. i remember the first time i brush hogged this land. i walked it up and down. i still managed to hit a pile of 4 fence posts that were laying in the 4' tall and very thick grass. i'll bet i was within 6" of tripping over them when i walked the ground. those fence posts grabbed ahold of the tricycle front end, spun the steering wheel out of my hands and turned the tractor right thru the fence line (there was no wire on the fence at the time!!!). sam would follow us out into the field and stay near as we worked. plowing...planting...harvest...sam was in the fields if some one else was there. i got a feeling she might have been out there keeping them company as they worked...and maybe she dozed off when she found a cool spot to sleep. we've had another wet, hot summer and the grass/weeds are as thick and tall as they have ever been. you could stand right next to a deer and not see it. we'll get my wife another lab. she likes labs and so do i. there is still corky, the australian sheep dog, remaining on the farm. he is getting old, also. |

Of all of The Creator's gifts, surely the dog must be His crowning achievement; a companion made up of boundless love, relentless loyalty, and uncommon valor. With the loss of a dog we are diminished. But with the birth of each new puppy we are enriched.
Thanks, Boss. |
