Look for "Bulgarian" AKs.  You might be able to find a nice SLR, or even a SAM7 for around what you're willing to spend.  The Romanians and MAKs are good, but it seems to me that you will always end up wanting better quality when you go with those.  I highly reccomend getting it right the first time.

To alter a quote from "O Brother where art thou":  "A SAR will only awake your appetite without bedding it back down"

I think many here will agree.
