What type of wood is/was used by the former com-block nations for their AK/RPK/RPD/etc?

Thanks,

I have a genuwine Polish AK-47 kit and a genuwine Izhmash AK-47 kit - the wood looks like birch plywood to me. My SAR's have stocks out of what looks to be what we Ol' Time Texans call Piss Ellum.

I heard it was a European beechwood similiar to
birch, sometimes it was imported from Finland,
I read that Egyptian Maadis were made from wood
that was imported  from Finland?
