For caliber 7.62x39 which mags are good and even more importantly which ones should I avoid?  Is there such thing as a bad AK mag?  For example are the norinco 30 rounders good or bad?  I'm new so enlighten me.  Thanks.

There really are no bad AK mags.  Some are prettier, some are better finished, but they are all built like a tank and work fine.

I have hundreds.  I have had three bad ones in the whole lot.  Mostly worn out, and they looked like it too.

They are not flimsy or prone to as many different problems as AR-15 mags are.  There is no "off brand" military AK mag.

The east german steel mags have about a 5%-15% failure rate when brand new. They will load fine, but when it comes time to shoot the followers will jam after about 10 rounds. The problem comes from the mag bodies being a little tight. Never trust a mag till it has proven itself. The only other problems I have seen are plastic mags with out the steel reinforcements in the lips. They work,  but wear out faster.

Are you talking about the 5.56 EG mags?

Sorry, EG 7.62x39 steel mags. The mags without metal feed lip reinforments were some experimental Bulgarian 7.62x39 mags.

I have seen some AK mags screwed up like Rot said.

You can drill out the dent and they will work.  Look screwey but work.

The feed lips are hella stout but the body is softer than you think.

Ditto.  I've only had one 7.62 AK mag ever fail me:  an East German one.  All others have worked fine.  I prefer the Bulgarian synthetic waffle-pattern mags myself.

Ditto on the Bulgy waffle pattern mags. I love 'em!
