Investigators found that reports from a witness saying he saw the Maryland sniper using an AK-74 rifle were false. Now here's the thing that bothers me. How many people besides gun owners and not even all of gun owners ever heard of an AK-74. I'm sure most everyone, including Sally Soccermom, has heard of an AK-47, but I'm not to sure Joe Public is too familiar with the AK-74 unless he was into firearms or in the military. This bothers me that if this witness was a fellow gun owner that he would betray us and mislead authorities.

Apparently the guy was an ex-con (or so they now say). He probably does know what an AK-74 is through hands on experience........

I think he's just a sick individual, and we should help familiarize him with an AK-74 by standing him in front of one while we pull the trigger.

Supposedly he's a formerly convicted felon, so he should not be a gun owner by law. Many people confuse "47" and "74" anyway.

Hey Ross, haven't seen you around here in a while!
By the looks of it, he will soon be back in jail. What an idiot.

they posted a picture of the fellow that gave the misleading info on the ar side of the board yesterday.
he was a black man...didn't look like he could tell an ak from a doorknob to me.
in the heat of the moment...in poor lighting conditions at 30-40 yards, i rather doubt that i could discern an ak-47 from an ak-74 either.

I'd say that he said it was an AK lookin gun and the ATF, FBI and law enforcement put the 74 label on it so it would be consistent with their need to pin the blame for this attack on a .223-caliber weapon.

I honestly think that the guy stated he saw an AK and others may have logically jumped to the conclusion that it must have been an AK74 since they aren't filing 7.62 bullets
As for our "witness", I think he was making up a story to get some of that reward money.

Or he could be part of a 3 man sleeper cell who converted to Islam during his last prison stretch and was sent to the scene of the shooting to give bogus info to the authorities to allow his confederate an easy getaway. Or
