I have always just lubed the rails and the part of the bolt that has the guides for the rails. Sometimes a little on the part of the bolt that rotates and the big spring.

What are the proper places to lube an AK?

I put a dab on the pivot points of the fcg, receiver rails, bolt carrier guides that slide on the rail, and where the bolt shaft and cam move in the carrier. Only a wee bit on the return spring.
Q tip swabs the big mess out of the receiver area, paper towel wipes most of the mess off the piston and bolt assembly, the occasional brass brush when the gas piston grooves build up, cotton rag swabs down the bbl with any bore cleaner not having ammonia (hard on chrome), and an occasional brass chamber brush.
