First, i want to build my own ak but i want to try my hand at finishing the receiver. Ive seen different kits, the flat one with holes drilled and lines partially cut to bend and weld up the side walls. And the pre-bent  receiver w/o any holes drilled in. Which one is the best for a beginner. I could get a small drill press to drill the holes verse welding. Also, if i buy a romanian kit with the barrel in the trunion, do i need to head space it? ive read mixed opinions on this. Lastly, screws or rivets? Some say screws perform great, some say its not worth the risk, does it really matter?

For a first-time builder, I would suggest nothing less than one of the 80% receivers (FFL reguired from your dealer)as sold by Ohio Ordnance Works or someone similar. The firing control pin holes are already done, as is the folds and rails. The only thing left to do is mount the front & rear trunnions and the trigger guard rivets then drop in the control parts. If you get a kit that already has the trunnion mounted to the barrel you will have to have it pressed out to install the front rivets correctly. Some guys just drill out the old rivets and hammer in new ones in the drilled out holes, using the barrel as a backing-bar. This may appear to work but the rivets will eventualy work themselves loose again. Check out some of the building tips on this board, they have helped me greatly. Good luck.
