I bought an Aero rail with a specialized nut that replaces a milspec nut and results in a free float handguard. My logic is that this has the benefit of any new-fangled specialized free float coolnes, but let's me maintain milspec 'chassis' so I can use whatever is the next new hotness.

Logic?
Replacing the milscpec nut does not let you maintain anything.
There are freefloat handguards that actually utilize the milspec nut, allowing you to maintain that nut, NOT remove the barrel and gas block, and allow you to change to yet another "free float coolness" that attaches to a standard milspec barrel nut.
Your Aero nut allows you to attach an Aero handguard, and you must remove the barrel, and gas block.
