Hello all,

I found an old A1 stock w/ early buttplate, but it is old and worn.  It shows the mold pattern all over the stock.  Basically small odd circles.
Is there any way to refinish it somehow and have it  like look kind of original or not look weird.  Only paid $5 for it so no big, but just wanted to try
and refinish it to look better.

Thanks,

T

I cleaned mine up really good with alcohol and then painted it with flat black Duracoat. It looks great. If you stock has obvious surface defects that will show through the paint then you could try lightly sanding with fine grit paper and then applying a primer first. Then sand the primer smooth and then paint.

I've done several with Plastic Paint available at Wal-Mart, It Works Too.

I used an old micromesh kit.

Basically sanded it down with coarse grit sand paper and then used the kit which makes the final finish more uniform.

It still retained the non gloss finish and worked really well.

Its been a while since I looked for a kit but most can be found on aviation maintenance websites. skygeek, aircraft spruce etc.

I also think that woodstove paint works pretty well if you heat it up abit after you spray it. I did this once and it turned out pretty good. I just sprayed the flat balck on and stood up up on top of an electric radiator heater until it felt about 150 degrees. It's been pretty durable so far.
