I've seen the thread showing more greyish lowers and also the black Teflon coated lowers and I'm curious whether uppers have the same variance? I just ordered a black lower and I'm going to build my first kit soon, and hopefully I can get the parts to match pretty well. Its just a project and will be a plinker so I'm not looking to win a beauty contest.... but I don't want the assault rifle equivalent of Frankenstein's monster either

So whats the verdict? Do uppers come in grey and black? Or are they all just black for the most part?

You're probably looking at images that are improperly exposed...they appear washed out. Too much flash.

A black upper can look grey in bright light with wrong camera settings.

That's probably what you saw.

Colt use to make a gray upper/lower called "sandstrom gray", but that gave way to black in the past few years.  All the makers use black (different shades in many cases) for current production upper/lowers.
If you want gray, then post in the "retro" forum for info on how to make your black one into a gray one.
